If you have not checked out the reviews at eham, give that a try, there are several pages worth, just look under "product reviews", then scroll down to "HF Transceivers", then Icom. Plus there is a thread on "bargain" HF rigs in the articles section where the Icom #718 got basically rave reviews as a "best bang for the buck" entry level rig. Hope this helps.

I have been using one of these rigs for a couple of months now. I have to say for the money its great. I added the CW filter and for my current operating needs this rig does not leave me wanting anything. Menus are easy to get to. Don't expect this rig to be in line with the 2-3 k buck rigs but it will not disappoint you. My only peeve with the rig is the noise blanker is kind of useless it often adds more noise than what your trying to remove. Buy one you will be happy.

Ditto on the useless NB but for the bucks I don't think you will find a better rig. Even has a decent sound on AM for a ricebox. I'm very happy with mine.

I started out on the IC-718 until I sold it in order to finance my FT-847. I actually miss the 718 at times, it is a joy to operate, works good, sounds good and never let me down. I used it base, mobile and in the field, it was a solid performer at all times. Highly recommended for a first time rig.

I have owned a 718 for almost 2 years and cant think of anything i can complain about. I dont work much DX and mostly use it for local 200-500 miles and ALWAYS get good reports with it. The DSP unit works very well and if you buy at the right time you can get it for free. I wouldnt pay the price they want for it but over all its been a great rig and im considering another for the mobile.

I hear people compalining about the Noise blanker on the 718. I think some people are getting the NB confused with noise reduction. The only purpose of the NB is to reduce or eliminate pulse type noise such as ignition noise. It is also common for the NB to distort your received signal if you have the NB set to high.

The NB in the 718 does exactly what it is intended to do. It's not noise reduction as found on the UT-106 DSP unit.

If you would do the AGC modification for SSB, the noise blanker works great!

DSP (NR) needs to be turned down to "2"

Great radio for the money!
