I've had one for about a year now - it's BIG, UGLY, but sure sounds sweet when compared with the Icom SP-20 (a pittiful excuse for a speaker costing so much). #I recently added the ClearSpeech Base to it. #I'm still trying to find a permanent spot for it in the station lineup (most equipment is rack mounted but kinda hard to rack this "black box"). #I added a 1/8" jack on the back input panel (don't like those HiFi push connectors). #The unit is completely sealed (would like to be able to clean the cone every now and then) and no way to get inside the box except thru the small round hole that the input terminals are on. #For $109 (shipped) I am completely satisfied. #73 de Jim K4LIX

Assuming you have one of the "newer" grill models(holes not waffle) you can get inside. The grill pulls off. Use fingers! No tools! You kinda work it around. That reveals the cone and four screws to pull the driver. A word of advice, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I bought one in November when I ordered my new Yaesu. From what I read in the eham.net reviews, it was supposed to be much better than the $200 add-ons you can buy with most base transceivers. People raved about it. So, I bought the Sounds Sweet speaker instead of the Yaesu speaker.

It is definately an improvement over the speaker that is built into the FT-1000MP MkV. I have no grounds for comparion with the 1000MP's external speaker, as I didn't buy it. But, it certainly beats the old Kenwood system I had before. However, I cannot support the claims that it will make much difference in copying weak signals. When it comes to copying a weak station that is down in the noise, I still have to put on the Heil headset.

But, I wouldn't discredit this speaker because of that. I doubt I would find any speaker that would be better than a good headset for copying those kind of signals. For other situations, I really enjoy this speaker's sound. The dynamic range is better than I've heard from most manufacturer's add-ons, especially on the low end. It gives you bass that most manufacturer's speakers do not, and that makes a bigger difference than I thought it would (especially when copying CW). I am quite happy with it and would recommend it to anyone.

Like K4LIX, many people seem to consider it ugly. I don't think so, although I've heard that the newer style grill (which I have) made a big difference. In my station, the black blends in well with all of the other equipment. Sitting on the left side of the transceiver, its size does not make it look out of place mostly because of the Ameritron AL-1500 on the right side of the transceiver (which is a pretty large amp). But, it seems placement is a problem for some people so I'd make sure you measure things up first.

One thing you might consider is using it to put something else on top of. For example, smaller control boxes might be difficult to access if they are at table-level. If you put the speaker on the table, then the control boxes on top of the speaker, it may improve access to them. I have a little shelf for those types of things, but I use the top of the speaker as a storage location for my headset. If I put them on the table when not in use, it would be in the way (between the keyboard, mouse, cw paddle, remote keypad for the rig, etc., that are already there) The speaker makes a nice little shelf for them.

Anyway, thats just a suggestion for how to not only fit it into the shack, but actually have an improvement because of it.

I run 2 of these speakers each with a clearspeech filter and the combo can't be beat. They might be big and ugly but they beat the heck out of anything that the big 3 make for alot less money. It's a please listening to SSB that sounds like FM.
