I saw something very scary on the TV news last night. Apparently "Lord of the Rings II" is opening soon, and the local Geekaloids are literally camping out overnight on the street outside the theaters, waiting for the SECOND the ticket window opens.

Quite frankly, these Lord of the Rings dweebs make hard core Star Wars and Star Trek (ah, same thing) devotees look like Hugh Hefner's "regular" guests at the Playboy Mansion. The last time I saw such densely packed Dorkage was when I saw pictures of a Howard Dean "meetup" in the paper.

Sorry, but the whole Lord of the Rings thing is intensely boring to me. I got dragged to the first Rings flick a while back, and felt zero interest in the whole mind-numbing movie. It sucked. Supposedly, if you read the book first, the movie makes sense. I'm here to say if you DIDN'T read the book, you're not going to figure it out from the movie. Foogeddaboudit....

Is the whole Lord of the Rings culture an offshoot of the "Dungeons and Dragons" fad? Seems to be. Very similar brand of Twinkie appears to enjoy each.

I'm hoping one of you newbie 2x3 callsign Tech fellas can explain it all to me. I'll just wait quietly here for your reply.

Buh bye.

Sorry OM...

This 2X3 waits till they come out on PPV/Blockbuster. I can get mas comfy in my QTH than the theatre. And if the flick is a bomb.. hey I only spent 3 bucks on it vs. what is it now 12+ with popcorn for two?

Out.

Steve,

You made the fatal mistake of any newbie. You missed this the first two times so you assumed that something totally new showed up.

The books were first published in 1951 I believe but really took off with the soft cover editions in the 60's. I have the 1964 first edition paperbacks, not because I collect stuff but because that's when I bought them. And yes, I can even recite all the poetry.

Two summers ago I was talking with some muscians at the Half Moon Lodge in Wyoming and one of their friends made an obscure reference to the Lord of the Rings. I proceeded to recite some of the poems. This guy was amazed, he had done his English Doctorate on the Lord of the Rings. Tolkien is considered one of the best authors of the 20th century, and we had a great evening discussing the books and Tolkien as well.

Read the books if you get a chance, always better than the movie. My 14 year old son has before the movies came out, and yes, he wants me to camp out there. Fat chance.

Did Tolkien comment on knowing code? You tell me.

" All that is gold does not glitter........." J.R.R. Tolkien

Nerdstock! I love it.

I read Tolkien. But I'm not sure he was the first to do it.
There was a Medieval writer--can't recall his name. He created a world of machine men that he called golems. I think that's where Tolkein got the name for his character. And I do like the movies. I'm glad that technology is such that the tale and its creatures can be presented as close to the books as they are.

But I know they are but castles in the clouds. And I look askance at those who try to live by and in such.

My stepson was a theater manager when the Star Wars prequel opened in '99. He arranged for my wife and me to see a sneak preview of it several hours before it made its public premier. When we arrived at the theater, there was already a significant line of Vaders, etc. lined up for the midnight opening. It was late afternoon.

Showing in the same theater on another screen, was the movie "Never Been Kissed." In the front lobby window, was a huge 8ft x 10ft poster for the movie, with the title in huge, black, block letters.

When we came out of the theater, that line of Vaders, Yodas, Obis, etc. ( curiously, there were no Leias, at least not pretty ones) was stretched in single file under those letters. I nudged my wife pointed at the line and where they were in relation to the words. I asked her if we had a camera in the car. I would have taken a picture of all those poor guys, with their light sabers, robes and helmets standing under the words. I would have captioned it, "NO $4!+"

I, too, will probably wait until the DVD is released to see "The Two Towers." If I see it in a theater, it won't be until the freak element has abated somewhat. It's just a movie, after all--not a way of life.

!!

This would be the pot calling the kettle back!

Just go to your next local hamfest, and observe the creatures, denizens and other weirdos that inhabit these gatherings!

Callsign hats!
Pot bellied men with sandwich boards (Wanted! spark gap equipment)
Antennas sprouting from every possible body part!
Radio Flyer wagons loaded with free magazines, after all, hams are notoriously cheap.
Every conceiveable pot metal tool, at low, low prices

And of course! EVERYONE has an HT or 2 or 3
Gotta be ready for that next emergency! #

As a CW contester, I think the perfect contester ensemble at a hamfest would be:

Call sign cap, Tee shirt with "599" (59, if phone op) on the front, "73" on the back, and "QRZ?" on the tail.

I don't really have a problem with the caps. It's the caps with the name under the callsign that I think are overkill. Callsign + name = 0 more to say. Mystery over, 73. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Went to HamCom 2003. Lots and lots of stuff... alas if only I had th money to buy any of it. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Anyhow, Lord of the Rings is pretty cool. Especially in the graphics department. Of course I had the advanatage of my sister filling me in on what was happening during the movie when things got confusing.

I like Star Trek, but I've never understood the people that dress up and go to conventions and even speak Klingon...

I had a similar discussion with a friend today in class... I came to the conclusion that I have a responsibility to filter out what I feel may be filth, even if it means judging a book by it's cover.

So far, I have been pretty accurate. I saw the first Lord of the Rings movie, and nearly demanded my money back. I havent even considered going back to see any of the other ones...

Lord of the Rings is nothing compared to Harry Potter. That, my friends, is the root of all evil. That Rowling person responsible for Happy Potter should be tried for Contributing to the Deficiency of Minors. She is one of the few who rank up there with greats such as Tolstoy in their ability to write pages upon pages of nothing.

Dont waste time with this new influx of D&D fashioned movies and such.

Read stuff by Chuck Palahniuk. He really knows whats going on.

Just a note, Steve, for your edification, the movie opening tomorrow or today or whenever is #3 not #2. And I have to agree with some of the other guys, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is some of the best fiction that I have read in the last 50 or so years that I have been reading SciFi and science fantasy. There was fantasy written long before this was written and much written after, but the Rings Trilogy was the first that created its own complete 'universe', complete with history and mythos, it is by far the most complex background ever created in this type of writing. For years, I swore there was no way to convert the novel to film other then by animation, but with the magic of computers(gawd did I just say that) they have found a way to do it. It's not perfect and believe it or not quite a bit of the books got left out of the movies.

They are a good read if you have never read them.

Friends, Romans, Doodz....

Leading off the Hit Parade is WX7B, who replies to WB2RJR/0's "newbie" reference with: Uh, now you blew it Marty...

Now we're going to get the standard W3SY stump speech. "I've been a ham since 1970 and had my current call since 1977, so nyaaaaaaa, nyyyaaaaaa!

Swing and a miss, slugger. OM WB2RJR/0 is quite correct. HE has been licensed 41 years -- I, only 33. To him, I rightfully am a Newbie. I respect, and defer to, his seniority. If only today's Johnny Come Lately showed the same deference, and didn't constantly inundate us with their take on "what's wrong with ham radio" (or "HAM" as they like to call it), this world would be a better place, Jack. Haw! <satire>

For OM WB2RJR/0 -- Kudos for your knowledge and appreciation of Tolkien's oeuvre. Not quite my cup of tea, though. "Different strokes, dot dot dot," you know. But I did enjoy Howard Stern's Private Parts and Miss America.

I have no doubt at all that Tolkien was "one of the best authors of the 20th century," and that the films are true to his works. It's just a pity, from my point of view, that the whole thing has been hijacked by the Dorkeoisie. One man's opinion. Anything that's endorsed by "Krazy Kids in Kostumes" is guaranteed to be a complete turnoff to me. Just like Howard Dean.

For KE4PJW -- Harry Potter fags? <snicker> I think the cutoff age for Harry fans is about 14. Then you get promoted to the Dungeons 'n' Dragons crowd.

Goth party, anyone?

Out.

Oh oh oh oh oh! By the way.... Didn't mean to ignore the reference to Hamfests, and how they compare to "Lord of the Rings" campsites.... Yes, we've covered the Hamfest phenomenon in this space before, and we all agree that the Hamfest is a magnet for mutant life forms. And it doesn't help that many current Hamfests are also combined with "computerfests." So you get your ham geeks AND your computer geeks. It's a feast of sights, sounds, and (ugh) smells. But at least THESE individuals are gathered to share an interest I enjoy. Lord of the Rings bored me (admittedly because I did not know the background and story), so there's no doubt that a "Rings Meetup" would be tedious.

Hope that clears things up for all concerned.

Who says I don't listen to them? Certainly, I do. But the problem, too often, is their perspective is limited to what they hear on the 2 meter repeater, via their shirt pocket HT. I'm also on record as saying that the cluelessness of many newbies is as a result of lack of proper mentoring by experienced hams. I had a lot of good teachers when the ink was still wet on the Novice ticket. problem is not enough of us take the time to help, and on the other side are too many "who already know it all." Solve THAT one, Jake! I took my son, now aged 11, to see the first Harry Potter movie. I suppose he was 9 at the time. I was planning a wonderful nap (I can sleep anywhere, through any noise.) Sadly for the nap plan, I found I enjoyed young Mr Potter. And I equally enjoyed the second. So much for D&D after 14. I AM older than 14!

As for seniority, I know, I'm just a kid here. 29 years hamming next month. Of course I'm also younger than most of y'all at 42.

For reading I'm kind of a simple man. Patricia Cornwell, Dale Brown, Coonts, Motorola service manuals . . .

It's all good. As long as you enjoy it, read it. Heck, I've even been "caught" with a Belva Plain novel or two . . .

Last, about hamfests. Yes, we've all seen how embarrassing it can be to be associated with hams at hamfests. Computer shows aren't quite as bad, as EVERYONE has a computer, so normal folks show up at computer shows. A look at my callsign lookup will show my pic and I don't think I look TOO geeky, but since I'm a ham AND computer user . . .

I like LOOKING like a geek at hamfests though. That HT200 with the 38" whip pulled out (on 29.600 fm) is geeky looking. The PT300 lunchbox with telephone handset slung over my shoulder is REALLY geeky. But hey, when in Rome . . .

Chris, is that a RECENT picture of you on your QRZ page?

Hey, SOME hams are reasonably normal doodz. Some. I can take the dorkiness. At least when hams get togther, I understand what they are rapping about. D&D and Rings geeks -- I have NO clue what they are babbling about.

Gimme the Ham Nerds any day.

I realize I don't totally fit the stereotype - I play team sports and am a professional jazz musician. Admit it: That all makes me pretty cool. Every now and then, even my KIDS think I'm cool, and that's SAYIN' something!

Anyhoo, don't bash the Ham Nerds too much. I'll still take their "shorts with black socks and sandals" and other fashion transgressions over a bunch of Dweeboids who go out in public dressed as elves and hobbits.

W3SY,

I'm disappointed that you missed a major detail about the campouts.

People camping out yesterday were camping for the opportunity to participate in "Trilogy Tuesday"; an 11 hour showing of all three LotR movies.

For which, by the way, they've had their tickets since October.

w3sy
12-18-2003, 05:22 PM
Hey Marty,

That's correct! They had the same thing here. Imagine 11 hours in a movie theatre. (I've also heard the figure of 13 hours bandied about.) You had better have a cast iron bladder to attempt that stunt.

And I'm gonna guess the smell wasn't so pleasant in there by midway through the second movie.

Again, no offense at all to those of you who are legitimate Tolkien fans, and even those of you who DO dress up funny and camp out all night and spend an entire day watching Rings movies. I couldn't take 11 minutes of that crap, let alone 11 hours.

Now Monty Python.... that would be a different story....

Some of the modern country songs would pass for rock songs a few years back, but that is another topic in itself. Kind of makes you appreciate the old gospel songs with very little instruments of any kind, just plain SINGING that came from the heart and not after your wallet...but back to the topic in this thread..sci - fi will always be changing and different ideas by different folks of the future or of a different world/time/culture. ...kind of like 75/80 meters at night..if you dont like one conversation, flip the vfo a few kc s and listen to another..or another..or another.

Well, I don't know about the geek label, though some of my High School classmates would probably nominate me thus. But I am a true, horn-rimmed, pocket-protectored nerd. In High School, it was mostly the 'Future Lawyers of America' who read Tolkien. As the rare techno-nerd who actually read English, I also read the books. Having suffered through all the major works of Dickens in Junior High, Tolkien was a blast. But, I was never part of the Ring 'inner circle'.

However, now 35 years later, I find the movies a lot of fun! So far, my family has really enjoyed the Rings movies. My 15 year old daughter saw it last night, and she loved it. She is NOT a geek, though she gets good grades and has picked up a few nerd tendencies from me. She has to see any movie with Orlando Bloom (in 'Rings'http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif or Johnny Depp in it. Fortunately, 'Pirates of the Carribean' was a really good movie!

We all read the Potter books, so we feel we need to go to the movies, though I think we all agree that the books are better. My cousin was one of the early writers for Spiderman comics, so I feel obligated to go to the Marvel comics movies, but my family usually won't go to those. I enjoy them, the family thinks they're stupid. I've been watching Star Trek almost as long as I've been licensed (forever) so I can't miss those, and my wife has gotten hooked on the series too.

Now, if you want to see a really scary movie filled with strange, alien creatures, watch a tape of any Ann Coulter or Michael Savage interview...

I HAVE been unfairly labeled as a geek for no reason other than I still know how to use a slide rule. And while I grew up on 70s album rock and still love it, I also have a tendency to have baroque classical coming out of the stereo. (My wife, who is 37 but considers herself an "80s" child, doesn't like ANY of the music I listen to. Then again, she doesn't like my choice of sports teams (GO FLYERS!) either. Good thing she likes . .. oh never mind!)

Holy crap! I think I fit into every geek category you guys have listed.

Let's see. SF fan since I got out of diapers. Not as much as a fantasy fan but read LotR as a junior in HS (70) and reread almost every year since. Saw all the movies on opening day, with midnight showing for RotK. Missed getting tickets for the Tuesday Trilogy. I have the collectors edition of first two movies (FotR/TTT). Have attended some SF conventions including WorldCon, but probably only one media-related con. I like SF, Sci-Fi, AND Skiffy (not to say I like everything in all three categories). Saw Star Wars about 20 times when it came out. Ivanova is God.

Yes, some colleges have professors or departments specializing in Tolkien studies. And he predates Medieval writers. Much of it is based on Norse mythology and stories. Tolkien inspired many copy cat stories which inspired D&D.

Did someone mention Monty Python? Almost all eps on DVD. Have been know to burst into "The Lumberjack Song" at inappropriate times. No one is safe from the "Parrot Sketch".

Guess I'm a Harry Potter fag too. Read the books as soon as my daughters done with it. Seen the movie.

Computes are my life and hobby. I have computers at home running 3 versions of Windows (well, running may be too generous of a term), two versions of Linux, and OpenVMS. I have a server, broadband, and WiFi. Looking on my shelf beside the desk I can count 8 motherboards, 3 video cards, a stack of 4 hard drives, and about 6 other cards. That's the overflow space. At work I'm a system manger with 5 servers and about 70 users (one job, 40 and 200). Yes, I go to computer shows, from the local dog and pony to HP sponsored Enterprise events. Comdex is my wet dream.

Now I'm a newbie ham. Got my Tech Dec 9, studying code and general/extra. Plan on finishing those by April or May. Just got a 2m HT now. And I'm following the Usenet philosophy - listen for a while, a long while, before hitting the PTT. I plan on attending a Hamfest here in January just to check things out. Ok, I won't carry my HT but how about I stick 3 or 4 antennas in my pockets and fake it? I have a propeller cap (see, I am a computer nerd), can I add an antenna to the top of that?

But your right, KG6QQL, if someone doesn't like something, don't read/see it. I don't try to convince anyone that because I like it, they've just got to.

And say that, I have read Chuck Palahniuk. Or tried to. Fight Club and something else. Sorry, I'd rather read something to inspire me. The writing is excellent but the story is nothing I care for.

Oh, and by the way w3sy, I like Jazz (but I'm not a jazz geek). And classical, rock (of most sorts), metal, and even some grunge and country. But I was once given a musical award on the condition that I never try to play an instrument again. And they'd appreciate it if I kept the singing to a minimum too.

Jay - not only geek, but honored to be geek, wallowing in geekness. Ubergeek. Farfengeek. Ok, wait, I think even I'm getting carried away.

Wow, did I just write all that? Obviously I have nothing better to do this afternoon. Ok, nothing to see here, move along, move along.
