Nice touch with the Double Gulp sitting on top of the Halicrafters. "Hey, let put a glass of liquid on top of an old tube type radio. What could happen?'

I got my first chance to solder coax connectors onto LMR-400. That SURE is harder coax to solder than regular RG-8! I had to rush back here to work to get some PL-259s to put on the brand new LMR-400 we had for the 2 meter antenna. I impressed upon the club that 200ft of RG-8 would have INCREDIBLE LOSS and the only way to have even a MILLIWATT left to the antenna is to use LMR-400.

We then added a piece to extend the 6 meter coax. So, 4 PL-259s installed on Field Day and the club members got a live demonstration of just how to do it.
UNFORTUNATELY, I couldn't get the soldering tip hot enough to melt the solder well on the shield, so it is poor connections on them, but they worked. Need almost a TORCH to solder those!

This was our home away from home from Friday night to Sunday. At least the temps stayed below 100 for the weekend. Got to see a shooting star early Saturday morning and we saw the ISS go over Saturday night. Other than the buzzards circling something dead nearby, it was a fun time.

Nope. Each operator put up their own antennas and established their own operating position. About the only concession to convenience we made was using a wireless network for our logging software.

Because time is money in business, crimped plugs are a must in high-volume production. But, with good tools and technique, soldering any connector is not difficult -- including UHF males on LMR400UF. I've soldered HUNDREDS of UHF males onto coaxial cable in the past 4 decades. Most recently, to retrofit my cable grounding/entrance box:

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7218/6958389786_56dca625f1_n.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8145/6958528738_aa6701d536_n.jpg

You'll note I had to solder three plugs in mid-air (no bench/vise, etc). These cables have a foamed PE dielectric and are touchy. The dielectric melts if you're not quick about it and/or don't have good technique. I am and I do.

The RG-58 cables above use 83-58FCP plugs -- the only crimped plug I use. They can be installed using only a pair of diagonal cutters, cable preparation is non-critical, the plugs are VERY rugged, and the cost is comparable to the 83-1SP + UG-175. They're perfect for FD, where RG-58 can be used (below 30 MHz & 100' length).

The kid working the TS-120 had no idea what ham radio was until the night before. We went over some rules and procedures then we threw him to the wolves ;) He managed to get three contacts on Friday evening. Saturday morning he studied the band plan and spent some time listening to others operate. He took the operating chair for the start of Field Day and never relinquished it.

Kudos to you guys for giving "the new kid" the opportunity. Sounds like a contester in the making!

PS: A TS-120 was the first rig I bought on my own, and I wish I still had it.

That boy - Justin, just went to his first hamfest today. His dad bought him a Technician study guide, and they showed some interest in attending some club functions.

Two other kids from the baseball team want to stop by and work the radio for an afternoon.

The TS-120 is a great first radio. The kids master it in about 30 seconds.
