What is the main difference and which one to buy? (about Rx I know :-) )
Based on ARRL lab testing the FT-857 is not as good a performer as the FT-100 in several key areas, primarily receiver performance.
The 100 also has a larger, easier to read display and the DSP comes standard instead of it being optional as with the 857. However, the 857 can now be had for under $700 US with the rebate coupons. The FT-100 has been recently discontinued by Yaesu and remaining stock, if there is any, is priced at almost $1,000 US.

If you can find it cheap...100D is the way to go!
Make sure you get the later models though, I have heard problems with earlier made ones http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

I know nothing of the 857 but I have a 100D for almost a year now and in a word SUPER! The RX is super, get great reports on TX audio and if I hear them I can work them mobile...I have noticed they are rare on the used market and prices range from about $600 to $800 which is strange considering I bought mine for $749 last year new from R an L in Ohio...I paid $1300 for the rig the FC-20 auto tuner plus the ATAS- 120 screwdriver antenna...My first impression of the menu was not good as so many functions but with operation it becomes really easy to deal with. The DSP unit is great mobile for reducing road noice and just general Qrn on 40/20 meters. I like the 2 antenna jack setup for HF/6M then second for VHF/UHF...I am really happy with the package wish I had a second one for base operation.
