Do you think the 847 is the best satellite transceiver on the market?

Without question. But that's achieved at the expense of making it just a "good" HF rig. You won't get all the bells and whistles you're accustomed to on HF, but that shouldn't bother you if you're going to use the radio for its primary purpose -- working the sats.

Nevertheless, I still use mine as my sole HF rig and it does a very good job. I'm very happy with mine.

Yes, since early 2002 I have had FT-847 in use both on HF and higher bands. No, problems with the rig so far. Just, updated my rig with new additional filter sets, and the rig "sound" better and better..... A good choice!

Quite the rig indeed!
Currently using one, yet to try out the Sats but will soon. This rig will do almost everything you could want. Is it a perfect rig? Well, it is close enough for my taste.

P.S. Hook it up to the SuperCat Controller and watch it do even more than you thought possible!!

According to the ARRL lab reports, the receiver on 6 meters and above, all bands, in the IC-910H is better than the receiver in the FT-847. Their sensitivities are
identical but the 910H has better dynamics and has better phase noise. I have no idea which is easier to operate since I use separates.

YMMV,
