Town in Australia has a 'bleeping' name and they are trying to decide if they want to change it. I remember hearing about a town in Eqypt, but I don't think that one really exists.:p

On a similar note about words and their meaning, the local newspaper ran a headling "Fracking to begin in Liberty". I showed this to Anne and she fell over laughing. She didn't know about gaswells but she had watched Battlestar with me and asked "what the frack was going on".

For those geeky enough, Cylon toast.

Been there. Absolutely beautiful place. Peaceful and mountain idyllic. Shame they feel they need to change the name.

And no, I did not!

I was in Seefeld Austria in 1978. They knew then. I'd like to go back and take a tour of Nuremberg and Prague.

Not so interesting.

In a bar once I spotted a really cute YL, sidled up to her and asked her name.

She said, "F**k off, Bozo."

Of course I replied, "Nice to meet you, Miss Bozo...":p

SSW of here is a little town named Reddick. The locals pronounce it differently than the rest of us. :)

We have an area near here called Bumpass Cove, and you can imagine how it's pronounced. And it has a ghost story associated with it. (http://www.strangeusa.com/Viewlocation.aspx?id=58571)

The Austrian town should simply follow Pennsylvania's lead and change their name to "Intercourse". Problem solved!

Not Australia but don't worry, you're not the first to make that mistake.

Most Australians probably wouldn't give a bleep about that name.

The popular wysiwyg editor used right here at qrz.com was previously called fckeditor. FCK is the initials of the non-English speaking author. It's now been renamed to ckeditor (http://ckeditor.com).

Funny thing but today a number of newspapers including RT have featured an article about a village in Austria with a rather descriptive name. The villagers are tired of having their village road signs stolen and have asked to have the name changed to Fudding. Big problem though, another Austrian village had the same name and they changed theirs to Fudding and they don't want two Fuddings in Austria. They could have a competion with a good prize for choosing a suitable new name, not one including a double k.

Been there. It's actually not far from Paradise and Blue Ball.

Really.

Then there's the town in England that they were trying to change to "Sherton" some years back, from its original name of Shi**erton! (Do you like how I avoided the vulgarity?);)
I first saw the name on a roadsign back in 1971.
I didn't have my camera with me---bummer!

What about the town of Wetwang in North Yorkshire? They must have some strange looks when they say they are from there.

But it's also about context:

There's a town in Yorkshire with an even worse "internet searchable" name, it's just off the A629 and is a station on the Huddersfield - Barnsley railway line. They are supposed to have a similar problem over thefts of their signs.

Those G folk will know where I mean. G0GSU and several others live there.

In South Georgia there is a sign on the Interstate, exit to Effingham. I ask my wife if she knew why they called it Effingham, "No", It's because F** ville sounds too crude.
Sometimes she just doesn't appreciate my humor.

I thought that was who the neighbors blame when they get interference on their TV.

The coldest place in the country is not International Falls, MN, nor is it Frostbite Falls. It's the small town of Embarrass.

Lassen National Park has a place where the volcano spewed a valley full of big boulders. It's called 'Bumpass Hell'.

I'm not embarrased because I live in Commack, NY...BUT I was told that some of my neighbots were embarassed because I live here...that is until I decided to pay for professional landscape service. Taking down my antenna tower also helped.

Wex, w2ilp (Initial Lawn Poverty) I was the owner of a dandelion farm with a large crop of healthy organic weeds that came up in every spring and seeded the neighborhood. Did you know that dandelion leaves are edible as salad greens as long as they are not chemically fertilized? Food for thought...I think...but not welcomed here...

How do you pronounce Bumpass? Is it Bum-Pass or Bump-Ass? I dunno myself...but the name of Ralphiy's nerest neighbors in Gene Sheppard's "Christmas Story" was the Bumpasses. These neighbors were also featured in other Sheppard stories. They were famous for having a large number of uncontrolled wild dogs and a sexy wild daughter. I guess that Gene named them after what he thought was a wild western name.

There are lots of Dutch names used in New York. They were named when NY was New Amsterdam. There is a waterway that is called "Kill Van Kull". I wonder if anyone actually killed Van Kull....but that name sounds more threatening than Bumpass...I think..

Wex, w2ilp (I'll Letit Pass)

The great thing about "Bumpass" is that Australians,Kiwis & Brits can think it is hilarious for one reason,& Americans another!
It is truly an equal opportunity ridiculous name.;)

Come on, HAY, don't be telling those folks that...we've got a bad enough mountain hillbilly rep as it is...there are a few who call it bump-ass but most around here call it bump-us....btw, there's some great smallmouth fishing in the Nolichucky River curve at Bumpass Cove.

It would probably be pronounced "Bumps" here in the UK...

Wembury is where I live. Its a fine little village by the sea. We have a pub, a post office, 2 hairdressers, a doctors surgery and down at the beach a cafe.
