I think these types of stations are the best. It means so much to me to work this station because i went to Pearl Harbor. I thank everyone who runs this station every year. I infact worker the Edmund Fitzgerald special event station (N8F) and it was so much fun. I can only amagine what it would be like to go on the USS Hornet!

* I have one question, what size SASE do you need for the qsl do you need? Is it a qsl or certificate?

Thank you again all who run it!

If you would like one of our Special QSL Cards simply send your QSL Card with a standard size SASE and once our QSL Manager has confirmed that you are in the ships log, he'll send it off to you. If you would like our "Complete QSL Package" no SASE is needed. Included in this package is a shoulder patch, a certificate, a CD-ROM with over 300 photos of the ship, and both our standard and Pearl Harbor QSL Cards. (The Pearl Harbor Card is for this event only.) We ask a donation of $7.50 for this package. This will be our last event at $7.50. Due to increased costs of materials in the package the donation request will increase to $9.50 at our next event. If you would like a ships hat included in this package, please increase your donation to $25.00 and send a note in your letter stating that the extra money is for the hat. If you don't include the note then our Dispersing Officer will assume that you are just being generous and sent an extra donation. All donations to the USS Hornet and the USS Hornet ARC are fully tax deductible.

Hi,

I'm very concerned about such a marcial war picture in connection with our peaceful hobby. Even if I try to understand your emotions regarding this historical date I didn't understand wy the hobby must be carried out on a war ship !?

If this would be important for you americans, then you should remember at the same time what you army has been done in Afganistan and the Iraq, where tausands of innocent children, womens and solders have been killed by U.S. bombs and forces!

I was a friend of the US people long time, even on 9/11 but after the revanche in Afganistan and Iraq I feel fears about the US future, esp. under such a president as Goerge W. Bush, didn't respect international laws.

So, if you talk about such activity on a war ship, please think about others feelings in future.

ROTFLMAO!!!! Let me put this as clearly, yet as politely, as I find possible at this time: GO TO HELL!

You see while your people were too busy to notice, mainly because you were up to your neck in the task of murdering 13 million innocent people, the Japs murdered thousands of Americans in an infamous and dastardly sneak attack on the US Navy. We will not let the world forget this! And we will make no apology what-so-ever for our QSL card. If you have a problem with it then I suggest you take it up with your former allies.

But not to worry! We are currently designing an appropriate QSL Card to commemorate VE day as well. We will make sure to illustrate in kind the atrocities committed by Germany. A citizen of what is called “The Former Soviet Union” designs our QSL cards. He has access to an archive of all of the appropriate photos. Although, I must admit that those photos would be much more appealing if we had developed the Atomic Bomb just a few months earlier. But alas, it was not meant to be. Too bad!

As for Afghanistan and Iraq, the light of truth and justice often scorches the dark earth across which it shines. Tyranny and terrorism will be expunged. If you attack us, or support those who attack us, you will be eliminated with extreme prejudice. PERIOD! End of sentence!

Wow! We are getting a lesson on war ethics from a German. I cannot begin to fathom the hypocracy there. Not like you or anyone else who might read this was in anyway responsible but the irony is astonding. I don't believe any war is without civilian deaths. So to point out our short commings is absurd. If you are an anti war person, that is an unrealistic idealism. How well did that ideal serve people in WWII? I for one never would have thought anyone would have had an objection to such an exercise. Oh well, it takes all kinds. Perhaps you, Sadam, and Osama could go to France and have some wine together (or just whine)?

P.S. Didn't our military beat your country; twice? (sorry, could not resist) lol

ROFL!!!!

The statments made by the German ham have to be some of the silliest things I have read in years. I guess Pearl Harbor was staged by our government! Maybe He can give us folks here in the states the FACTS abt the 1000's of women and childern killed. I really would like to hear his facts and sources!!! It has got to be good!!!!!

Oh and I will be looking to work this and any other War memoriel station of any kind. We must not forget the men who died and what they died for, weather its a past event or a current conflict

Hi,

from the reaction of some of you to my email from yesterday I think I have used wrong words to just wonna say let us keep war scenarios out of our hobby.

Its my opinion which I better shouldn't have expressed in this context and on this reflector. However, to some reactions esp. on the Germans history I'm not going to respond by the same reason.

So, If I should somebody have polite and perhaps injured in his feelings and thoughts, I deeply apologize for that. It wasn't really my intension.
In some private emails with Dan/N0FPE I tried to expressed this more detailed.

Concerning the ops fm the U.S.S. HORNET: i most certainly do think it is a wonderful endeavour from the folks that are directly involved in it! I had a good RM3 friend from NWP/NRM NAVCOMSTA ARGENTIA, Newfoundland that was transferred to the HORNET from there, while I went to DESLANT. We both stayed in contact for many years afterwards. Insofar as the previous detractable comments offered, I only have one thing to say about that: "I have four family members and a very close neighbor's brother who gave their all to protect our way of freedom, and I myself bear physical and mental scars from later such type endeavours." If anything should be borne out at all, it should give honourable status to those that chose to step into harm's way to honour and protect this country of ours that God above saw fit to allow to exist. Until my demise, I shall always give deference to those airmen, soldiers, and sailors that have went before me!

I have just about had it with Germany and France and their lack of support of THEIR allies while they are engaged in a war protecting our combined freedoms.

Thank God for our Commander in Chief and thank God for our service men and women ! I have lost family at Pearl Harbor and have family serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. I would be ashamed to not support them in anyway possible, through whatever means nessessary in whatever venue afforded me. If amatuer radio, QRZ or it's users, either here or abroad have a problem with that. T.F.B !!!

I look forward to the ops from U.S.S. Hornet , keep up the good work guys and I'll be sending my $ for the hat and patch...

I for one very much look forward to working your station, and intend to try to work you on all bands. #Hang in there, you guys are doing a much needed service.

As for the rest of the stuff that went on involving the fella from Germany, I have this to say:

It is a shame that we still find it necessary to go to war over land, oil, politics, religion, or anything else. #When I say "we", I mean the human race as a whole, not any particular nation. #Billions of dollars and millions of lives are wasted this way. #All life is precious, it doesn't matter what face it wears or which god it prays to.

Be that as it may, we must defend ourselves, and those who can not defend themselves against tryanny and terrorism. No one should have to live in fear, or under the heel of a ruthless dictator. The best way to prevent that is to do exactly what war memorials do best...remind everyone of what happened. #If you forget your history, you doom yourself to repeat it. #Don't sanitize it, don't digitize the gory bits, show it all. #Let people know just how bad it really is. Maybe someday we'll all learn. #War doesn't kill tanks and planes and ships and buildings, it kills people. #Good people, bad people, soldiers and civilians, men, women and children. #Unfortunately, it is still sometimes necessary to protect law and order. #Freedom is NEVER free. #But it could be!!

NEVER FORGET

Hi to all, While I appreciate that this will be an event of particular interest to American Radio Amateurs will the USS Hornet's antennas be beaming towards Europe at any time during its period of operation, and also what is the relation PST to UTC for us over here?

Thanks

John EA7EUF/EC7AII

12-01-2003, 04:36 PM
Hi John,

The antennas we use on Hornet are omnidirectional. So it's the luck of the draw and band conditions that will determine if we can work. I hope conditions allow us to make contact. While this is certainly an American event, all are welcome! We give a prize to the operator who made the most contacts or the farthest contact for each of our events. So when they hear your call, believe me, they'll want to work you for the distance.

As for PST vs UTC, I believe that PST + 8 = UTC. But since that changes with Daylight Savings Time, I'd double check that if I were you.

N8CPA

Neither have we forgotten that for years after VE day, after the truth of Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Dachau, Treblinka, etc. was exposed, European fingers pointed at us and asked, "You knew! How could you let this happen?"

They will not be able to point at the torture chambers and the mass graves, still being uncovered in Iraq, and ask that same question!

September 11 taught us basically the same lesson as Pearl Harbor in its day: Oceans are moats of insufficent size to protect our populace from those who would harm us. What set the later event apart is that American civilians were the target.

The Baathists not only ruled through terrorism, but facilitated its practioners' ambitions against us. We removed them as enemy assets. And I am not in the least bit ashamed that our president took such a bold step because the world's psychos have one less source of training and weaponry.

Today's Germany and Japan are not the same countires they were 60 years ago, because our fathers and grandfathers did what had to be done, to make them what they are today. What they delivered to those countries at that time was richly deserved, and sparingly served. Today's Germans and Japanese are also indebted to them, whether or not they admit it!

So I will be listening for Hornet and hoping to work her. And I'll be proud to tell my unlicensed friends and relatives if they ask about the QSL.

Herr Deutscher,
It is too bad you are sadly misled about the why's and wherefores of the QSL card chosen for the special event station. Let me attempt to re-educate you;
In a sneak attack led by the Japanese Empire on 7 Dec. '41, over 3000 US soldiers, Sailors, and Marines were
viciously and savagely attacked while relaxing on a sunday morning in Pearl Harbor. This was a slap to the face of the USA, whom had been, up to that day, neutral to the war raging in the pacific, and european theaters.
In other words, we let hitler and emporer hirohito do whatever they wanted. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of German, Austrian, and French people were being rounded up all across europe, and slaughtered in the concentration camps erected by hitler's forces.
On 11 Sep. '01 over 3000 people lost their lives in New York City, USA on another beautiful morning (nice weather) when hijacked arcraft (Civilian aircraft, I might add) were flown like bombs into the World Trade Center towers causing their collapse. If you think we are so bad for commemorating and saluting our Fallen, so be it.
I point out respectfully that if it weren't for the USA, Herr
Deutscher, you would NOT be a ham, you would more than likely be in a Fascist uniform, and still be saying something about that coward hitler.
Sorry, all... I just seem to have a problem with peacenicks. The mind of a war protestor seems to have a few wires loose.

After reading the comments from the ham from Germany, I was ready to add my 2 cents worth but others have stated the facts so well, I'm sure even he, will get the message. Yes we do remember those who sacrificed for our country and we will continue to remind ourselves that the cost of freedom does run high. I work at a VA hospital and I am proud to be able to have a small part in taking care of veterans..

In new employee orientation at the VA hosptial, one of the speakers asked a question to the class... It was..."When a patient is ready to leave the hospital, who pays the bill?" The answer is... it's already been paid.... by the veterans we serve.
I hope to work the Hornet and show my support.

You say that you were a friend of the US people. #Why should your opinion change (from the actions taken to defend ourselves against the international terrorism network)?

Remembering those whose lives were lost defending our country from attack is what Pearl Harbor Day is all about. #And, a special events activity aboard an old warship which served its time (and is now retired) is absolutely appropriate.

I know two people from your country who literally weep when they think about what happened to us (on September 11). #They come here every year and love to do so. #Each time I see them, they are thankful for what the US has done for them personally. #You see, they were residents of Berlin. #Yes, and they were old enough to have lived through the Russian/East German blockade of Berlin and their rescue via the Berlin airlift.

Also, don't think for a minute that the Berlin Wall would have come down, allowing your country to unite again, had it not been for a very formidable former President of ours, Ronald Reagan.

All of us here in the US aren't in agreement over the invasion of Iraq. #Or, for that matter, everything done by our elected leaders. #But, I don't think you will find a single US citizen that would say our pursuit of the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afganistan was/is unwarranted.

I still remember seeing (and hearing) Air Force One fly over our home here in Florida on September 10, only to once again see it leave on September 11 and as it flew out of sight I prayed for our leader and for our country.

Not everyone here loves our President, and in November, 2004, we will have a chance to decide if he will continue to be our President for another 4 years. And, like in your country, the majority decides.

If the "Majority" vote determines who will be the President of the United States of America, then why isn't Al Gore in the White House ??

I just hoped that this kind of smelly debates about war no war, US/Europe and all kind of deviding politics would be kept off QRZ. Hope it was just a small vent created by an inadequate comment.

Anyhow, whatever happened, REMEMBER!

Because you, like so many others, don't understand how the system works. The "People" do NOT elect the President! The President is elected by the States. The only folks elected by the People are Representatives and, since the early 20th Century, Senators. The national popular vote has no bearing on who is elected President! This was done to ensure that rich and highly populated States didn't abuse poorer or less populated States. And the Bush/Gore election of 2000 proved that the system works perfectly.

Believe me, I know how the system works Mr. USS Hornet Amateur Radio Club Operator and you are correct, The "People" do NOT elect the President!

The system needs changing because as you stated so well, it's not the American Voter who elects the President but rather the voters in a handful of states. So as it stands, the adverage American has no say in who will be elected the President of the "United States" of America.

My apologies to the German Amateur who stepped on sacred grounds. Somber patriotism is still very important in the USA. WWII veterans are highly respected and will never be forgotten. We celebrate this respect with events such as the operation from the USS Hornet. To criticize that rubs a nerve that will get a sharp response every time from most Americans.

Your comments on current events is another story and is out of context for this celebration. We are in a time in my country where freedom of speech is compromised, even for differing opinions from our own citizens. There is even less tolerence for opinions from non-citizens. Either we agree with the party line or we are no longer patriotic and are a threat to "Fatherland Security." In time the smoke will clear and we will permit balanced dialog here. We may even listen to opinions from foreigners. For now the only truth we respect comes from the lips of the party leaders in charge. Truth from foreigners is not welcome and will be ignored.

I a searching the hornet since 0830 PST 1730 UTC on saturday, but all I found lurking around on all the bands an QRG you announced is Watherstation celebrating their Hurricane Station AKA Skywarn. Though it was fun working half a dozen of them on different bands, I never came over the hornet on one of the frequencies announced. Would love to get a badge and a hat and the QSL, but there was no chance to find the ship. Will further try hard and lurk around the upcoming night.

Good Luck for all and thanks to the signalmen aboard

Today's history question: Which side's former members, those of the axis, or those of the allies, committed the greater genocides after the end of WW-II?

Marty, I really do not understand your question. But I guess it is not directly related to the Hornett.... and tending to open another kind of debate.... Note that the word "genocide" is also often wrongly understood... I also do not see the relation with the code http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Gentelmen (and ladies),
There are some of us who could use a look (some of probably more than others) at an item I just ran across on my club's webpage! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif #Here it is:

THE AMATEUR'S CODE by Paul M. Segal, W9EEA (1928)
The Radio Amateur is:

CONSIDERATE..... never knowingly operating in such a way as to lessen the pleasure of others.

LOYAL..... offering loyalty, encouragement and support to other amateurs, local clubs and the American Radio Relay League, through which Amateur
Radio in the United States is represented nationally and internationally.

PROGRESSIVE..... with knowledge abreast of science, a well built and
efficient station, and operation beyond reproach.

FRIENDLY..... with slow and patient operation when requested, friendly advice and counsel to the beginner, kindly assistance, co-operation and consideration for the interests of others. These are the hallmarks of the amateur spirit.

BALANCED..... Radio is an advocation, never interfering with duties owed to family, job, school or community.

PATRIOTIC..... with station and skill always ready for service to country and community.

Some of the posts I have seen here during the past few days reflect NONE of these qualities(esp. #'s1&6), and I, for one, am quite disappointed with that, esp. among a group of Amateur Radio Operators. I happen to know that most, if not all of us have encountered this CODE before, it is present in almost every training manual that the(American Radio Relay) League prints, or has printed for @ least the last 11 years that I have been an Amateur Radio Operator! Those of you whom the shoe(s) fit wear it (them):p, those of you who have posted without malice/prejudice take a bow es KUTGW! #73's to all DE: KD7SCF # Dale Allen

Why do you gringos always need a hero? You kill defenseless people throughout the world and call it a calling. You people are either sick or brainwashed.
