Australia's Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister support ham radio. Australia's overseas aid to developing countries includes ham radio training and equipment. Australia’s Prime Minister John Howard and Foreign Minister Alexander Downer expressed gratitude for Australian ham radio training in developing countries.
A certificate sent on the 26 September 2003 to Sam Voron VK2BVS reads. “The Australian Government expresses its gratitude to Sam Voron for a valued contribution towards assisting developing countries to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development”. Signed by Australia’s Prime Minister John Howard, Australia’s Foreign Minister Alexander Downer and Member of Australia’s Parliamentary House of Representatives Dr Brendan Nelson MP.
In 2002 Sam spent 3 months setting up the Amateur Radio Training School of the Solomon Islands at a time when the outside world was advised it was unsafe to visit. #A few weeks after Sam’s return to Australia he was back in the Solomon Islands after being asked by AESOP Business Volunteers Limited if he would like to go back for another 3 months and continue his help.
In 2003 Sam spent another 6 months overseas, this time in Somalia where he organised an Amateur Radio Training course in Galkayo, Northern Somalia. When Oxfam, Canada heard that Sam was in Somalia they asked if he would be willing to go to Kismayo, Southern Somalia where he then formed the Amateur Radio Training School of Kismayo, Somalia and coordinated translation of the Amateur radio license course and examinations into the Somali language.
The certificate expressing the Australian Governments gratitude sent on Sam’s birthday when he was in Somalia (another country Sam was helping while the outside world was advised it was unsafe to visit) came with this letter from the Member of Australia’s Parliamentary House of Representatives Dr Brendan Nelson MP.

Mr. Sam Voron,

Dear Mr. Voron
# # # # # # # #I am writing to you to congratulate and thank you for your overseas volunteer work. Each year the Australian Government officially recognises the significant contribution of volunteers to Australia’s aid program as a small way of honouring the men and women who have volunteered themselves to others. In helping those less fortunate than yourself, you have displaced despair and filled the void with hope.
# # # # # # # #As your local Member of Parliament, I wish to express the Australian Government’s appreciation of your contribution to Australia’s aid program through your overseas service with AESOP Business Volunteers Limited. Your commitment of 3 months has provided much needed assistance to the Solomon Islands.
# # # # # # You have made an invaluable contribution, not least because of the way in which you have given of yourself. The success of our aid program owes much to the character and temperament of those, such as yourself, who implement it.
# # # # # # #As you were unable to attend the Certificate Ceremony, (Sam was in Somalia at the time) it is my great pleasure to enclose your Certificate of Appreciation, of which you can be justifiably proud.
# # # # # # #Please accept my personal thanks for your generosity, hard work, and concern for those less fortunate.
# # # # # # #I wish you well in your future endeavours.
Yours Sincerely,
Dr Brendan Nelson MP
Federal Member for Bradfield.

Our Australian Amateur Radio magazine mentions that n9wac@arrl.net (NOTE THIS E MAIL ADDRESS APPEARS TO BE WRONG, ANYONE HAVE THE CORRECT E MAIL?) is working on a United Nations research project into how the volunteer work of hams are relavent to the UN's Millennium Development Goals.
Email Kirsten details of what you have done so that the silent work of hams world wide are recorded as part of her research.
