Some signal reports I received say while the rf carrier signal is strong my audio seems somewhat low and a little nasally. They have no problem copying me, however they turn up their volume sometimes because of the low audio. #I wonder if this is a normal characteristic of this radio or if possibly the mike cartridge is faulty. Or perhaps I'm not holding the mike close enough to my mouth although that doesn't seem to be the case.

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Hello! This will probably fix the nasally and/or muffled audio of that microphone. First, take the back off of your microphone...there should be three screws. Be careful not to lose the plastic bits that are in there, which are the up/down piece, PTT, and the lamp/lock. You will then notice that there are about three large screws inside of the opened microphone, and also a small screw which is on the actual PTT switch. Unscrew all of them and CAREFULLY lift the microphone circuit board up passed the black screw post (it's about 3/4 of an inch long sticking out of the mic.). Be careful of the red and black wires that are connected to the mic. element. THEY ARE FRAGILE.

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Now that you have the mic. circuit board out, find the round mic. element (it's about 1/4 of an inch or less in circumference total). It has a sort of rubber gasket material around the metal microphone element. Remove it. I just used a small, thin, knife blade to ease out the mic. element (with the rubber gasket intact, haha). Oh, I don't suggest pulling on the red and black mic. element wires to take out the element, as they might break. After you take out the mic. element, you will see a small, black, round piece of plastic with about 1/4 of the plastic missing from it. Take it out, and put it in a drawer (or you could just throw it away, I suppose).

After you have done that, take a look at the front part of the microphone housing, you will see two very small looking holes near the word "mic". Take a small needle and poke a hole in the "hole" that is sealed off. If you hold the front part of the microphone up to the light, you will see that even though there are three holes, one of them has not been punctured. Doing this, along with removing the round, plastic "baffle" thingy should give you slightly louder audio. Re-assemble the microphone, and then get a radio check. This worked for both of my Yaesu rigs. It should work for yours as well. If your friends tell you that your audio has not improved, don't worry. Doing this mod. has certainly not hurt anything!

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif By the way, if you don't feel comfortable doing this modification, by all means, don't do it. I would hate for you to damage your microphone because of what I told you. Do it at your own risk...it's easy if you take your time. Good luck! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Does it have a 'Half Dev' setting in the submenu? If it does, make sure it is set to off.

Hi. How are the audio problems coming along?

I recently purchased two of these mobiles. They both require a lip lock on the mike. They are not nearly as sensitive as other Yaesu products I have owned.
OK once you get used to it.
