Based on ARRL lab testing the FT-857 is not as good a performer as the FT-100 in several key areas, primarily receiver performance. The FT-100 specs are slightly better than the IC-706MkIIG in important areas although in the real world it really comes down to operator preference between the two. You might want to take a look at the test results of the FT-857 and the 706 that are posted on the ARRL website.

At $600 after rebates for ft-857, and having had both rigs, buy the 857!!!!!!!!

The 706mkIIg is by far the winner.
At one time I owned two of the 706's!

If you like dealing with the menu for EVERYTHING you want to do, then by all means go for the 857.
If you want to save some money and be UNHAPPY with the radio, then by all means go for the 857.

The 706 is EZ to operate, and performs.
Well worth the extra cash.

thanks for your replies http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif you all are true hams in my book. after carefull revie of all the affordable radios, i have to go with the ft-897. wow what a radio!!! i have owned and played with the 706mkIIg. the 897 spanks the 706 to death http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif not that the 706 is a bad radio, it was my first choice. i love icom,i still think that the 706 is a top of the line radio, but the dsp on the 897 is far better than the 706 and not to mention the 32 different color displays this thing has. you can see it in the britest light.or if your color blind and cant see green to well like myself, the 897 has the multiple colors to choose from.i like the mic eq to. so if you get one of those hot heil elements(dx-4) you can tone it down a bit with the built in eq. thanks guys, you were a wonderful help http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Realizing that this is an old thread, the decision is made, and the purchase is done...

I had a 706 MKII. #The decision to replace it was based on an FT-817 receiving much better, and the 897 receiver being based on the same design. #This is not in line with the QST test results -- but my 897 does hear better than the 706 MK II it replaces.

On the other hand, my old IC-751A was MUCH better than the 706 MKII #-- and will be again, once I replace the plastic PLL trimmer caps.
