I wanted to thank the staff of qrz.com for their awesome service of
providing practice tests (http://www.qrz.com/p/testing.pl) to prospective or current amateur operators.
Today I passed my Extra exam at a VE session in Akron Ohio with a score
of 49/50 !!! #I studied the ARRL exam book and the question pool in the
back. #I found it to be of much help and got me prepared.
However the practice tests on your website provided the BEST preperation for
the exam without a doubt. #The random generation of questions, speed and
unlimited availablity of the practice tests is what really burned the
material into my head.
Without the service you offer on your website I would have had to study
twice as long and possibly gotten a few more wrong on the real exam.
I also used your website to prepare for my general exam and did well on
that also.
I want you guys to know that your site and it's many service are greatly
appreciated by me and think they are a valuable tool and resource to the
amateur community!!
Keep up the good work

The practice tests work to increase proficiency and confidence. But there's a dark side. The meanest woman in the world got her Tech ticket - with the help of this wonderful site. Her call sign is KC8VAF. If you ever hear her on the air, beware. She has 3" teeth, and you can light a cigarette off her forehead. Did I claim to be honest?
Really, the tests are the absolute best way to build the skills and CONFIDENCE. I can't say enough nice things about this site, and it's balanced approach to all issues, not to mention, dedication to education.
As for KC8VAF, well, she's actually the most wonderful woman in the world, and she married me. She also passed the Tech exam with a 100% score, 3 weeks after starting the process, and I give at least half the credit to the practice tests. Thanks, QRZ. Now, the most wonderful woman in the world - has a call sign. Jim, AB8PX, formerly KB8EFD

I used the ARRL exam book and tried to take the practice test at least twice a day. I did this for about 3 or 4 weeks and I passed the EXTRA test without any problems.
This was the only time that I had to take the exam.
Thanks for the practice tests.

I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in on this thread. #GREAT JOB QRZ! #Thanks. #I passed my Extra Class test the first time last September, and I think it made the test a little less stressfull to know that I had passed multiple practice tests in advance. #It gave me a feeling of confidence that I had not had on previous tests that I took years ago. #Thanks again.

First off, congrats on the upgrade and the passing score!
Secondly, I wish they had had something like this around when I had to study and upgrade to Extra Class in the 80's!
The old study manuals are great, but something like this is much, much better I feel!
Once again, congrats!

In February of 2003 I passed the Tech with code using Radio Shacks manual, Two weeks later I passed the General using QRZ online practice test. I ordered ARRL's Extra manual, a waited and Waited for it, finally I tried the extra on QRZ and scored in the 80's after a week I was scoring in the 90's and took the Extra at the local VE Session in April passing 47/50. My ARRL manual finally came and gave it away at the next club meeting in May, still in the plastic. Thanks QRZ! Also the call lookup is great. Thanks Again http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I also used a QRZ Practice Test when I upgraded in the Spring of 2000. In fact, that's all I used to prepare for the Extra written. Being able to see my score increase each time I practiced gave me the confidence to attend a VE session in short order. It was a piece of cake!
I have recommended this site to many others since then. Thanks to all who make QRZ.com possible. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Hi!
I think my story is the ultimate success story with the QRZ tests. #On 2/14/03 I walked into the test session with nothing and came out an Extra class Amateur. #I took Elements 1,2,3 and 4 in one evening and passed in a total of 2 hours.
I started studying on 1/14/03 so my study period was exactly 1 month. ##Had 12 VEs show up on test night, and many spoke about leaving early. Every VE stayed until I was finished to offer encouragement.
I know other folks have done this, so it may not be a big deal. Yes I know back in the "old days" the tests were to design a dual conversion super het receiver out of popscicle sticks, duct tape, and a dead cat. #Point is that I would not have been as successful without the QRZ tests. #Thanks!!
P.S. And for those "old hands" out there pushing your nose up in the air, I went on and am up to 20 WPM in QSOs and faster just copying. #I thought I owed it to the hobby to meet the past accepted standard for Extra. Most of you have been really encouraging. #But there were a few butt heads whose call letters I ought to post here, but won't.
Just know while reading this, that I hated CW before I started REALLY studying it. Now I am 98% CW on the bands. And I ain't no genius!

The EXTRA class ticket is so easy now , anybody can pass it! I had to pass 13 WPM code test for General then take the ADVANCED class exam which was the most difficult exam, so much so , that it has been eliminated. How about all the REAL EXTRA's that had to pass 6 license classes which included 3 different code exams, 5-13-20 WPM and the very difficult Advanced written exam, then EXTRA written. Soon , I expect the 5 wpm code maybe be eliminated which will attract many more undesireable low-life , cber type characters .Just listen to cb to confirm that. Yes, there will be some "good people" too. Yes, there are some dumbos that got it the old, hard way and are still a problem. Overall, the code has been the only hard -to-do "filter" that makes you really feel that you have really accomplished something . It gives you that
"successful feeling" of accomplishment that you worked so hard for to be able to access all portions of the band segments.Yes, it makes me feel more like a REAL HAM. Yes, I do use code, only to work rare, fast cw, Dxpeditions. I wish all rare Dxpeditions would only op on cw from now on! I do notice a trend toward that. More of my operations are ssb, cu on the bands. 73 Tom K4SUS (Ham more than 40 yrs., off and on)
It works great with trial-and-error method.
(e.g. just keep trying until you get all right.)
This way, I got 100% at my tech exam.
Now I need to go for General...

I used the QRZ practice tests for Tech, General and Extra. I even challenged myself by re-taking the Extra once. Try re-taking your class exam again. It's fun!
The practice tests were instrumental in my daughter's successful Technician test.

I knew some elite snob would eventually make a post trying to remind all of us simpletons about what they had to do get their Extra license. It must be a real drag getting old and having nothing else to do except worrying about how you can remain the authority and judge of everyone else.
I wrote the editor of QRZ to thank THEM for their help and service to me and the rest of the amateur community. No one can argue what a great service the practice tests are and how much it helps people pass the test. Just think of all the new hams and upgrades that the tests have helped.
I would like to know what K4SUS has done to help the hobby?? Maybe you have elmered some people but I would gather from your response that probably not. Who would want to learn from someone like you?? Not me and oh by the way now that I am an Extra like you, I hope to hear you on the air in the Extra portion of the band so I can stop by and say HI!! I cant wait to be reminded how I am a "slow coder" and not a "real extra"
That really gets under your skin and I think it is pathetic and sad. Life is to short to worry about such nonsense like you elitists do.
Glad you have been a ham for 40 years and I am sure you "know alot" because of that. However your errogance turns me off and just know I have no respect for my "elders" if they have an attitude like you.
I dont care how long you have been a ham or what you had to do to get here. This is 2003, get over it sit back, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy chewing the rag. You will not undemine the accomplishments I have made or anyone else who has upgraded in the last few years.

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif I too passed my test because of QRZ. I studied the practice tests for almost a month just to make sure i knew the answers to a pinch. I also used the ARRL book that a VE had to reinforce the data in my head from the practice tests. I didn't pass with 100% or 99% but i did pass with at least higher than 90%. I am currently trying to learn the code so I can upgrade to general and Extra. I havn't had much success with that so far but I am not giving up yet. Anyhow thanks Fred for this site. As the other hams have stated I agree that this site is a huge asset to the ham community.

I won't fill this post with a bunch of quotes but to refer back to AG4YO and K4SUS's posts:
If everyone including K4SUS were as enthusiastic and as humble of a person as AG4YO (Charlie) then this HOBBY (yes it is a hobby) would be much more enjoyable. Talking to good people like him and others around this area is what makes amateur radio such a wonderful past time.
I got my tech ticket the same night as Charlie. I consider his
accomplishment of going from no ticket to Amateur Extra in one night to be absolutely remarkable. I know he's on the CW bands all them time because I hardly ever hear him on the repeaters.
He is proof of how well the QRZ tests work. It's all I used too. And yes, it's easy. That's what makes it so great. I'm sure there are people that think the tech ticket is too easy. All I can say is take it up with the FCC.
AG4YO could be an jerk like others and use his post to rail on no-code techs or whatever else people whine about on here, but he didn't. He took the high ground and presented a story that will encourage others to try to do what he did. That says something about his character as a person. I'm pretty sure he didn't learn that from a code test.
I just wanted to say that I admire your accomplisment Charlie and I'd rather have a one day, one month or whatever Amateur Extra around than some old bitter 50-year ham guy with a pissy attitude. Yes, they are the ones who should be teaching us stuff but when they spend all of their time railing on newbies rather than being helpful then no one gives a crap about what all they know.
Amateur Radio needs more guys like AG4YO. His is the kind of story that can inspire someone to get their ticket or to upgrade. The negativity that we see so often on these message boards certainly doesn't. 73 Charlie, hope to see you at the tailgater this Saturday.

You know it just goes to show that even if you proof read something like 40 times to make sure that there are no typos you find one immediately AFTER posting it for the world to see. Some people don't care (or don't know they typed something wrong). I do and it drives me crazy. If it bothers you too I'm sorry. Technically it's a grammatical error but it's due to a typo. Really, I did graduate from high school. I just had to get that off my chest.

Like many others who have posted to this thread, I found the practice tests available on the Internet to be very important in my personal process of getting licensed. #For the Technician and General theory exams, I wrote my own software for practice tests. #For the Extra test, I used Internet tests exclusively (QRZ and others) because I felt it was more important to be studying than writing code. #Having these practice tests available is important not because it helps you memorize the answers (a waste of time) but because it tells you what you need to spend more time studying (time well spent).
Regarding K4SUS' unfortunate comment, he's entitled to his opinion, but there's always been a way to get from "opinion" to "fact". #I'm sure that he'd support mandatory re-testing for license renewal, because then we will have all taken the SAME test and there would be nothing left to armwave about. #He's such a good Ham that I'm sure he'd have no problem passing the current requirements for qualification. #Mandatory re-testing would bring an instant end to these silly "I'm better than you" arguments because people would have to put their licenses where their mouths are. #It would cost a bloody fortune, but at least it would end the discussion.
And personally to K4SUS--if you ARE a better Ham than I am, that's great. #The Amateur Radio Service needs good Hams. # See you on the air. #I QSL 100%.

uh. I took the original Advanced in the 1960's and it wasn't that hard. I took the exam in the first few months that it was available. I recall that the General exam seemed harder. It had vacuum tube oscillator circuits, reactance calculations, hard core theory (not Maxwells Equations though) The Advanced exam, in contrast, was more practical, lots of operating stuff, kinda watered down like today's Extra.
I'm in favor of giving no-coders all HF privileges except 20 meters.

QRZ is by far the best resource for new and veteran hams. Not only does it help you get your foot in the door for your Technician class, but the General exams are more than helpful. I'll just add my thanks as well. I had study books as well but the QRZ tests were a great help and kept me on my toes while I waited three looooong months for the next area exam session.
Now if all these grateful hams would send Fred some of their extra cash...

I must chime in as I should have back in June. I passed my Extra after 10 years of trying. With the help of your practice tests. I didn't use a book. The tests on your site are a great learning tool.

Hi to all,
#I am an old Extra, one of those that passed the 20 word per minute code test, and you know what, it isn't that big of a deal! This is a hobby, we do it because we enjoy it, if we get to help people out in a time of emergency, then good. But you can't go through life eating, drinking and sleeping ham radio. The people that do have their priorities in life all screwed up. I have done many things in my life that I feel are greater accomplishments than having a 20 word per minute ham radio license.
#I have a 3 year old healthy son, I have a college degree from a fine university that is finally paid for and I have a professional license in the state of Ohio that allows me to be employed as a health inspector. These are just a few things I have done in my life that mean more to me than my 11 year old extra ham radio license. I have been a ham radio operator for 31 years on and off. Lately more on than off. The point I am trying to make here is those of you that have recently gotten a ham radio license, congratulations. I hope to have a QSO with you soon. But these old farts that think they are all high and mighty because they have a 20 word a minute extra class license I say, [B]GET A FRIGGIN' LIFE. Get off your high horses and welcome our new ham radio friends. Times they are a changing, you have to go with the flow. You are no better than anyone else because you can do CW at 20 words per minute!
#Remember it is a hobby and as so hobbies are supposed to be fun, when it is no longer fun or it is my sole reason for existance, or it is the only feather I can put in my cap, I will tear down my antennas and sell all my gear.
73's Good luck and good DX to all.

#And to the ham that passed all 4 parts in one night, I am not worthy, you are the man!

Allow me to add my $ 0.02 worth-as training officer for the Charles County (MD) Amateur Radio Club, I have conducted two Technician classes in the last year. In addition to using the study guide, I recommend that all my students use the QRZ.Com on-line tests to prepare for the "big night" (VE exam). To date, all of the students who stuck the class out to exam night have successfully obtained their license. Not that I have any delusions that I'm a great instructor but that those who attended the class were motivated enough to study and the QRZ.Com on-line tests gave them the feel for what to expect. Thanks QRZ.Com, you've helped add 8 more amateurs to the Southern Maryland community.

To All,
I bought the last copy of "Now You're Talking" at Radio Shack last year. I read "Now You're Talking", took the tests, but didn't feel as comfortable with the information as I wanted.
I did a random search on the web and ran across this excellent site! I took the technician test until I scored a 90% on it continually.
I spent about 11 days studying, including the excellent test material here. I missed two questions. I am grateful to QRZ for giving me the confidence I needed to take the test! When I go for further tests, I will DEFINATELY use QRZ's tests!

I worked the practice test for more than year an a half. Passed the first time, but kept going anyway. Happenings kept delaying my testing.
Now, I'm working on the General.
If it wasn't for QRZ, I wouldn't have a ticket. It gave me the motivation to go for it.
Back in the 70's I was trying for novice, and gave up!
Contrast that one.. This site is a definite asset http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

The exams on this website DEFINITELY facilitated my passing and cut my study time.

Isn't that something, that My post had
been removed,if somebody has a problem
with what I am stating please feel free to contact me personally, and not remove this reply.Mike you cannot hide from the fact that you contact Riley Hollingsworth factitiously over your personal vendettas and battles with fellow hams.Trying to use Riley as your personal tool is not only morally wrong, and unlawful you are a disgrace to the ham community.Don't try to play the role as some sort of upstanding citizen within the ham
community as people that know you are not deceived. You may think that Riley was deceived, but time and the truth are not. Please don't try to play model citizen, when you are far from it. #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

Ok congtrats to all of the new Generals and Extras. #How many of you can solder a PL259 (with or without adapters) to a piece of coax cable? #How many of you can connect up and tune up your new HF Linear into any antenna? #Also how many of you can construct and install your own HF antenna? #The real world questions are likely worth more than a memory test. #Get good with living in the real world after the memory world. #It will do you well with the rest of us.
Good Luck

I used QRZ for my Tech, General, and Extra class tests...aced the Tech, missed two on the General, and three on the Extra. The study here was invaluable and without it, I probably would not be a licensed ham. The only way to apply the knowledge is to, well, apply it (kinda like driving if you think about it).
Thanks QRZ!
I would also like to thank everyone at QRZ.com for helping me get my daughter KC9DNL (http://www.qrz.com/database?callsign=kc9dnl) her ham ticket. After reading the technician book and using the practice tests everyday for 2 weeks she was able to pass the test. All I can say is they work! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

To Steve, CNG, I didn't practice on QRZ, it was HAMTEST.COM for my extra exam along with the Gordon West Book years ago. And I made extra a time back. Before my elmer, KE4OBE, whom has been a HAM since the 80's. Like Mike, a dear friend as well as my elmer, I definitely CAN solder a pl-259 properly, I can even replace power supply filter caps and such goodies. I've tuned many an amp, but most of the time use my rig's on board power because I think 100 watts is just fine when you know how to make an antenna that will hear and talk.... I seem to recall a word called resonance. But yes, I have up to 1.5 KW available. I have strung many an antenna and like to colaborate with my elmer on designs from time to time. Please don't count us out just because we are good at taking tests or like to study online. Many of us really do like to tinker as well as talk. To Mike, KE4OBE, my friend, I can never thank you enough for kicking me in the seat of the pants enough to not only get my first license, but also bearing with me through the 5 and 13 WPM code (would have had 20 if they hadn't changed the rules when they did) and I'm tickled that we can both play anywhere we want in radioland now. 73 old buddy and 73 to all amateurs, let's keep the spectrum busy!! Keith.

Wish QRZ had element 1 practice tests. Did great with your element 2 and 3 practice exams. Thanks! To all you practicing code, keep at it, take the test, it don't hurt. Maybe you'll pass the code in less tests than I did. 4 times, or was it 5? Sure wish QRZ had the code practice tests, I would have known I wasn't ready on the code the first 4 times I sat the test. To people that don't think so, code IS tough for some people to learn.

The practice exams have been detrimental is all of my licenses. I started utilizing them before I got my first license and used them all the way to Extra. If it was not for these practice tests, I would have had a harder time moving up the ladder.
Guess a lot of people forgot to thank QRZ for all their help.
