KC8PMX-Ryan (kc8pmx@tm.net) writes "As a firefighter in the Midland County, MI area, I have found it extremely important to be an Amateur Radio Operator also. On one occasion, my mobile rig had gotten through to our Central Dispatch better than our fire service radios. This specific case dealt with the fact that law enforcement was needed for crowd control and safety for one of our firefighters. Neither our fire department HTs nor cellular phones got through.

This is just one small example of how Emergency Services personnel can be useful as hams... How about an emergency scene in general? If trained firefighters and other Emergency Services persons can get closer to a disaster scene by virtue of their training and licensure; can you imagine the advantage of having a Ham HT with them?

Take the time to recruit Firefighters, E.M.T.s and Law Enforcement people into the hobby. These are definitely the people needed on our side, especially when the need to justify our existence comes into play.

Just a thought!
