NV2A (rayswan@adelphia.net) writes "With all the diversity in Ham Radio, I find it odd that we are dividing into two camps. Those that favor eQSL'ing and those that don't. I can understand why a guy who has put thousands of dollars into IRC's, green stamps and envelopes & card stock would feel as he does about qsl'ing. But what he has is special to him and no one can take away that achievement. In our hobby, DXCC is a big deal! But is that to say that those of us with other priorities in life, those who don't want make the monetary investment can't have anything? What about those who simply can't make the monetary investment to get DXCC? Should they be denied? I don't think so.
In this day and age we could easily have eDXCC hanging on the wall. The real work, the rules, have already been done for us in the DXCC rules. So my certificate says eDXCC and not DXCC. What's wrong with that? Every award that exists today could easily exist in e-hamming! It's value is only important to the owner anyway. Do you think your neighbor would be impressed by your wallpaper?
I have heard others talking about the possibility of faking your eDXCC. It's only important to you anyway! If you faked it you would have just that: a fake, a fraud! Even a real one requires a buck to get a cup of coffee with it!
I have 280 countries worked in over 10 years with only 135 confirmed. All of them came via the buro or mailed to me unsolicited. I don't green stamp or IRC but I don't care if you do. That's your business. My DX club has passed the hat several times for DX operations and my few bucks were always in the hat with everyone elses. We should all support valid operations if we chase DX.
You can't stop progress. You can only hope to insure that it is of benefit and to minimize its short comings by getting involved. Lets have eDXCC and yes, I will still bow to the 5 band DXCC boys who did it the hard, and lets not forget, expensive way!
I would like to see MY ARRL get involved with the future of ham radio. Ham radio has been dying since my novice ticket in 1964! Maybe it wouldn't be necessary to throw so much gloom and doom around to get new members if they embraced this concept and tried to make it work. By getting in on the ground floor and leading the way to eQSL'ing, they would immediatly be the only creditable game in town. As it is, we face the prospect of commercial ventures slapping copyrights all over our hobby. If people can and do trust their hard earned dollars on the web, then eQSL'ing should be a piece of cake!
Thank you QRZ.COM for your e-platform and hence your e-leadership. I think you do a great e-service to our e-fingerprinted hobby!"
