ke0vh (ke0vh@netzero.net) writes "Edge of Space Sciences Flight #51 was launched successfully and recovered on the plains of eastern Colorado on August 25th. The EOSS recovery crew had one of the most interesting “fox hunts” as the payload package landed in some very remote pasture site, only 11 miles from the Launch site near Byers Colorado after reaching an altitude of better than 90,000 feet.

7 payloads were hoisted to altitude, and ATV from the balloon was spectacular, even showing the balloon going thru a snowstorm as the balloon ascended thru 25,000 feet, with clear pictures reported all the way through the descent. A cold front decided that launch time was the time to pass through, bringing showers across the launch site, but launch was accomplished at 1650 utc.

KBØYRZ, had ATV in the field near the landing site, actually saw the lowest payload module hit the ground before he lost the signal! The landing site proved to be a difficult one to DF into however, as a creek bed seemed to confound the beacon signals, and the site was again not near any roads. The recovery took several hours into the afternoon.

A film crew was on hand to tape the flight for a possible future airing on the Discovery Channel.

Future flights will include a crossband repeater, enabling contacts throughout the several state footprint of the balloon. Read W5VSI’s complete update at the EOSS Site (http://www.eoss.org/), and look for future flight announcements.
