View Full Version : Amateur Repeater Station W6NUT

09-13-2001, 03:39 PM
The FCC has just taken away automatic control privledges away from W6NUT Repeater. The control operator must be present at all times to continue repeater operation. Full details to follow...

Taken from the actual enforcement letter...

Section 97.109(d) of the Commission?s rules provides that when an Amateur station is being automatically controlled, the control operator need not be at the control point. The rule also states that automatic control must cease upon notification by an EIC (Engineer in Charge/ now District Director) that the station is transmitting improperly or causing harmful interference to other stations; and that automatic control must not be resumed without prior approval of the EIC/ District Director.

Amateur station W6NUT, a station for which you are the trustee, is under review by the Enforcement Bureau for apparent widespread violations of the Commission?s rules, including rules that relate to station control. This review is subject of correspondence between you and the Enforcement Bureau.

Until this matter is resolved, you are hereby notified that Amateur station W6NUT may not be automatically controlled. Automatic control may not resume until you are so notified by this office. If Amateur station W6NUT is operated under automatic control prior to notification from this office, enforcement action will be taken against your Amateur operator license and station license for AA6TK as well as the license for W6NUT. This action will include designation of these licenses for a revocation hearing, designation of your operator license for a suspension hearing, and a monetary forfeiture.

This is in fact relevant (Even though from 2001)
because today we have a similar situation with
terrible QRM by unattended PACTOR
stations on 20 meters in the digital bands.

It gives an example of what should be done with them.

If this is an example, then there will be some
pink slips flying soon for these high powered
digital robot owners who repeatedly come on and
jam existing QSOs from 14070 to 14115 kHz.

There is a similar problem with them on 40m and 30m too.

Hopefully the FCC will attend to this situation
very soon and put these PAC-PESTS off the air.

Not all Pactor stations are violators, but a number of
them are in serious violation of the rules. We will
report their behavior, and let FCC decide how to
deal with them.

I can't set the date of my posts - QRZ.com timestamps my posts for me. I think this is a QRZ.com problem. There are a bunch of posts with recent dates on the main qrz.com page - but when you click on the article, you can see that they are three years old. Looks like a glitch is causing old articles to be dredged up and shown as if they were new...

Edit: Just noticed that the main page shows all of these articles as being posted by aa7bq, but when clicked on, they all show as being posted by an unregistered guest.

QRZ is a great site. At least, the databases are way ahead of any other site. The forum, well, let's just say that running a 3 year old post JUST to create a little sensationalism leads one to question how good it is.

---Never ask a man where he's from. If he's from Texas, you'll eventually get his money. If he's not, he's probably polite. Either way, you're way ahead.

Another old Colorado saying: If God had meant for Texans to ski, He would have made bullsh*t white...

Yeah…

W6NUT – an aptly signed machine – has changed hands twice since this letter was sent. #In 2002, it became N6SAP. #Then, about a year ago, it became KG6DVO.

Changing hands, of course, makes administrative action a moving target. #Further, I hear that much of the mess on the machine has been addressed. #

But, wow… in its heyday, that machine was jaw-dropping to listen to.

Well..........as of 10.00 this morning the crusty mess called the 147.435 repeater has NOT changed one bit since all the "transfers of ownership". At times, 27.185 MHz in the immediate vicinity of a truck stop has MUCH cleaner language than .435 http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif What a disgrace to amateur radio.

Maybe Riley needs to make a few personal apperarances.....

You ought to hear the crap around NYC on the vhf/uhf cb bands. I wish the new "restructed" licensing systems soon to be put in place by the can company would allow HF priviliges ONLY on 75 meters for the no load notech or whatever license and let them go head to head with those good ole boys...har har. Lets see those no tech bozos try to get it on with the high powered rednecks.

The disgrace to amateur radio is that the 435 repeater is just about the only active repeater in Southern California. Sure, it’s a bit unorthodox, but that is amplified by the fact it is the only place on 2 meters where people are consistently talking. And, very often the conversations will be quite interesting – unlike the mind numbing crap that is mostly heard on the other repeaters. Don’t believe me. Check out the CARS system on 6 meters. Wide coverage of most of So. Cal. Into Arizona. The only time there is any activity on the system is for a Thursday evening net where stations exchange weather reports. Now how stupid is that?

ok, now think about it for a minute, since the date is showing sept 13, 2001 in the header, doesnt it stand to reason that the error is not in this "unregistered" guest, but in a glitch in the qrz site? so why are we flaming him for something that was posted almost 3 years ago, wasnt put up, and now all of a sudden, becuase the computer made a mistake, we start up this unregistered guest argument again.

Hello sir,
There is a thread up with a date 4 years old. Wondering if it was a glitch in QRZ.COM server.

The thread name is:
Topic: Amateur Repeater Station W6NUT, FCC-Enforcement

It also shows your callsign as the originator of the thread yet it shows GUEST in the message origin.

Just fyi for you.

The "moderator" knows very well what has happened. Unfortunately, he hasn't removed the old stuff that has resurfaced due to their system clock error. So, what you see is what you get.

Maybe its time for a thread "restructuring" so that currently relevant topics don't get truncated to la-la land from such stuff being unearthed.

Like we don't have a thousand other things to consider?

Gee, I Passed my First License, tech Plus with 1 wrong written, and 5 WPM by the skin of my teeth
I passed my General -100 written, 100 13 wpm

I got 3 wrong on my Advanced-ON A DARE

I CHOKED ON THE WRITTEN FOR EXTRA...Twice! But managed to get 20 WPM.

My Point? I am human. I am not perfect. Nor are YOU and nor is the folks at QRZ.

BUT QRZ is making ONE HELL OF A GRAND EFFORT. And I for one will Back them 100% anything less, find another webpage to whine on!

The KG6DVO Repeater (147.435 in Los Angeles, CA) is the finest and most entertaining amateur radio repeater in the entire United States. #I should know, I own it! #Am I a bit biased? #Absolutely. #435 is the most active repeater I know of. #Yes there is some foul language, yes the topic of conversation can be a bit over the edge at times but we have a huge following of regular users, listeners and SWL's which tells me people like it. #I love it! #If you don't like what you hear on my repeater simply spin the VFO or push the "off" button but don't whine and cry about it. #If you ever visit the L.A. area, bring your radio, 350 watt amplifier and 26 element beam antenna. #That way you can key up and say hello http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif # All kidding aside, we have a lot of fun on this repeater and we have a lot of great gatherings and events. #Did any of you hear the praise we got from Amateur Radio Newsline for saving another Hams life? #When called upon, we too can raise to the occasion and live up to the basis and purpose of Amateur Radio. #We simply have a hell of a lot of fun in between emergencies.

I was kinda wondering Gary if your kids are aloud to listen to your repeater when some one is using foul language. What are you thinking when someone is trying to start a hobby with his family and they can't because of objectional language on the airwaves.I'm not against anyone having fun, just remember that people are listening out there including the FCC.

06-15-2004, 01:00 AM
Hi GRN -

I wear headphones 99.9% of the time when I'm listening to the radio. #I would not allow my children to listen to 435, nor do I allow them to watch whatever they want on cable TV. #I think if you want to introduce your kids to amateur radio break em in on HF. #It's much more exciting for kids to communicate with DX stations, just my opinion. #But I understand and appreciate your opinion as well. #435 is so popular because of what it is not, a bland vanilla hi hi om repeater. #You either love or hate it, I happen to love it and unless I am forced to change it I will keep it just the way it is.

Gary,
I appreciate the reply on this particular subject .Having never being there in your locale, there is no honest way of what I think about the way the repeater is run.As far as I am concern that's your business. We have different opinions on this, but if your repeater stays busy that's a good thing also. Have continued success with it. 73 de W9GRN
