I'm checking out a new radio I got , TS-830s and at the moment I have my antenna lying on the ground. Its a G5RV by the way.
Picking up activity on the lower bands 40m and down.
Just not sure if it's the receiver or if the upper bands are just not really good right now and if the antenna lying on the ground is affecting reception
on the upper bands.
thanks for putting up with this question. I just dont have a lot of time with HF yet.

There were some major x-rays today; probably that.

Thanks, Just trying to make sure there are no problems with the rig.
I don't remember picking much up in the upper bands with my other 830.

I got on for awhile this late afternoon and didn`t hear much on the higher bands. 20m,17m some activity, very little and weak signals above 17. So it wasn`t just your antenna!

Is this not a better one SOHO (http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/)?

Getting that G5RV off the ground would be a good first step to better reception of anything!

Kinda difficult to believe no one else has mentioned this.

Got it off the ground last night. I'm going to listen again in the morning (early) Would love to tx but my tuner and mic haven't arrived yet.
Thought it lying on the ground was my main issue.
I also would like to find someone local to me that can
align the radio that dosen't mind me watching over so I can do it my self.
I already have most of the equipment ( tectronics 100mhz scope, multiple meters, MFJ antenna analyzer. Just need a signal gen and freq counter.

While I applaud your desire to align your own radio I must caution you. Use the correct alignment tools, not misfits or screwdrivers. The cores in the coils are fragile and a lot of the coils are a discontinued item. If you break the core there is no replacing it and the radio will not operate properly.

You need:
DVM
'Scope
Sig gen with calibrated output
Freq Counter
2 tone audio generator
Wattmeter and dummyload
Service Manual

Follow the steps in the manual and in the order shown in the manual. Don't jump around, many of the steps interact and must be done in the correct order to achieve the proper results.

How high did you get it up? I would put up a single band dipole 30-50 feet up before you start to align the radio.

Radio alignment is not top priority, Had the antenna up before last spring and took it down due to inclimate weather we had here.
I'm going to get it up the rest of the way today when I fix the mount for the base of the mast.
As far as tools for alignment I'm still collecting. I would much rather pay someone to do it but I'd always like to know how to do it just in case
I'd love to send it to Ken (K4EAA) but from what it looks like he's a very busy man at the moment.

I wouldn`t mess with the alignment, that`s asking for trouble. I`d get that antenna up and see how it does.
