I was at the Kitsap Hamfest and some guy got mad at me because I asked a guy who was selling a ant if I could use it for a base station instead of saying a home station or ham station

I personally have no problem with the term, 'base station,' as it is an accurate description. A good many hams, however, view it as a CB term - and are pretty testy when they hear what they interpret as CB lingo.
Chalk it up as a miscommunication.

I use the term base .vs. mobile all the time when talking about VHF/UHF antennas.
There are some people that are really sensitive. I wouldn't think anything of it.

Good thing you didn't ask if you could use it in the MO-BUBBLE!
Guess he wasn't all that anxious to sell it. Great "customer service" skills. HAW!!!!
"HamTerm" That's an old Commodore 64/VIC20 RTTY program, if I remember correctly. Man , that's going back a LOOOONG time !

Even a lot of us OTs use the term "base station" these days. Part of that is derived from that usage in business band operations.
Years ago the question would have been "Can I use this as a fixed station?" That was the FCC definition - "fixed" or "mobile." And most hams used "fixed" as the term for their 'base station' - the station at home.
But that term has been well assimilated into ham radio today and I think the guy who gave you a hard time for using it must have, for some reason or another, sized you up as either a CBer or a former CBer, and he didn't like something about you.
His loss. Forget it and move on. Not worth nightmares.

What is the difference between fixed - base - or whatever. It's all HAM - regardless of how you look at it - from any angle!!

Don't worry about it after all it is now only a HOBBY, and that guy was probably one of those OF's who are ignored and are dying off, soon it will be one big giant HOBBY and you will be able to call it Ham or CB it won't make much difference, just everyone getting along in one big family.......... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif he must NOT have needed YOUR money...wonder if he DID sell it to any one ? ...once I was at a hamfest selling a 2 meter rig and a dual band handheld...man walks up...picks up the front of the 2 meter mobile rig, lays it back down, sez " I can buy XXX over there ( points toward new dealer section ) for $ xxx . ( inclrementing that my price was waay too high for a used rig )..I asked him " How many of those XXX have you bought,?...He just stared and then walked away, while the other men behind the tables were " holding back " to keep from laughing out loud. I LOVE it when folks tell me that my prices are too high, for I always tell them ( look them in the eye as you say this ): "" Well, I am going to remind you of today, every time I hear of YOU trying to sell any thing at all, whether it is anything to do with radios or whether it is a car, home, 4 wheeler, gun, whatever the item is... whether it be on the air, or by a yard sale, or an ad in the paper, I will remind you of today". http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

The "I see CBers" crowd is a pretty funny bunch. Most of them came from CB rather than Broadcast, Land Mobile or other radio service background. I think they have a superiority complex because they label anyone who does not use ham jargon as a CBer.
As far as the whole "hobby" and CB thing goes, in the old FCC CB rules (Circa 1973-ish), making radio contacts solely for the purpose of making the contact or trading QSL cards was considered a hobbyist activity and was prohibited. To engage in those types of hobbyist activities, you had to get an Amateur License.

Amateur radio has always been a hobby.
It would not surprise me in the least if the first issue of QST described it as such -- as does the current ARRL handbook.

No, that's beauty always wins over personality.
I don't think either one always wins.

Oh, it's the old ," I could have gotten it for you wholesale " shill. Someone is always out there trying to rip you off, or make you feel bad about the amount you put into something.
Just like the previous example, when someone says, "I could have . . . . " I just look them straight in the eye and say, "OK, I will take a dozen. How soon can you have them for me ?" Never had to worry about shelling out the bucks, yet ! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Only thing worse than that is when you place a For Sale ad on an Internet Forum, and someone comes along and posts some message like "that thing is junk!" or "your price is too high."
I have always believed that if you read a For Sale notice and are interested in the item, you should contact the seller. If you are not interested, for WHATEVER reason, you should shut up and move on. People who piss on other people's For Sale ads probably did not get enough attention from mom and dad during their potty training period.
If you are selling an item, you have the God Given Right as an American to get as much money as you can for it. If the item doesn't sell, maybe you lower the price. If you, as a buyer, are interested, but don't like the price, you make an offer. SAY how much you are willing to pay. But people who appoint themselves as The Price Police, even though they aren't interested in buying anyway, need a refresher in Basic Social Skills. These same people usually need instruction in Personal Hygiene as well, but that's another topic for another thread.
OM KE4PJW -- The "no hobby talk allowed" rule on CB goes WAY back. When I was on CB in 1968, that was the rule then as well. The FCC used to come to town periodically and bust the ragchewers. You also could not discuss equipment or signal reports. That's how the clever "poundage" method of signal reporting started on CB. The CB crowd reasoned that if you talked about "pounds" instead of "S-Units," AIN'T NO WAY Uncle Charlie would figure out you were giving an illegal signal report. haw....
What you say about CB'ers getting ham tickets so they could legally engage in "hobby talk" is very correct. Many CB'ers spoke of "going legal" by leaving CB for the ham bands. These days, being LEGAL is the last thing on the minds of most Chicken Banders.
Badda bing...
I used to have a rig that didn't work.. it wsa used in the mobile. I repaired it and put it BACK into mobile service.
BUt now.. actually, regardless of where I use it.
I have to call it a 'FIXED' station.. cuz I fixed it!
of course.. when I took a new rig that was till young and in it's prime.. I removed some of its parts so it would not emit harmonic radiation.
Therefore, it was 'fixed' so it could not multiply!
