I purchased a kenwood ts2000 in 10/2001. The radio is only ok but has one two very annoying problems.

1.

It is lousey with strong signals especially on cw. I am not talking about local, just vy strong signals. there is an image signal down a few hz from a strong signal, which is not good when you are trying to dig out a weak one on 160cw. Putting on the attenuator gets rid of the weak one you are trying to hear, and narrowing the pass band does not help either.

2.

Three of the backlights that illuminate the the readout have burned out and there is no written proceedure to change the lamps, just a blowup of the front pannel on page 95 of the service manual.

Kenwood recommends sending in the radio to have the lamps changed. Lets see, thats about $35 shipping each way and 25 to 50 bux for service, thats at least a hundred for three or four lamps. Sure would have been nice if they had used l.e.d. s for illumination. I think I will knock off a hundred from the going price of a "good ?" used ts2k and take it to the next swap meet and let someone else worry about it or change the lamps myself and if I goof, throw the thing in the trash.

I have no experience with the TS2000x, but you can throw it away in my trash, if you like. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

As far as changing the lamps, it shouldn't be to difficult. Considering that the radio is pretty big. Best thing I can say is, take the radio to somebody that is profiecient in electronics and have them give you a hand. I had the same thing happen to my RatShaq HTX-252, it was a tight squeeze for the soldering iron, but, I was able to fix it. Maybe if the voltage is just right, you might be able to use LED's.
Hope you find a better solution than the trash can.

If the original voltage is too high for LEDs, use dropping resistors. I'm amazed Kenwood used lamps in the first place!
