QST,

The following was posted on San Antonio Radio Club reflector by W5EX.

Danny Weil, avid and original DX-peditioner moved to a Heavenly QTH Friday. His obit is in the Sunday San Antonio Express-News, page 7B. His extensive world-wide travels, ship-wrecks and near-death experiences at exotic operating locations were documented in many issues of CQ Magazine in the 50's. Some of this is outlined in the obit.

Here is a link to the article.

Danny Weil represents a wonderful era in amateur radio when determination, motivation, and necessity allowed people to overcome obstacles. #He will be sorely missed, and will be irreplaceable. #At this very moment, he is probably trying to figure out how to setup a DX station from his current location. #I'll be listening for your signal on 20 meters, Danny. #Rest easy, es 73 om. #BCNU.

After reading the obit of this man,it seems to me that he is an inspiration to the seasoned ham as well as the new ham alike. A great loss to his family, the community and the hobby. My condolences and deepest respects to the family and friends of this amateur radio pioneer.

Danny owned a clock/watch sales and repair shop here in San Antonio for many years. #He did not have a US call that I know of. #Danny was a member of the Alamo DX Amigos group from information that I found on the Internet.

Danny represented what I like to think of as the "Golden Age" of DX'ing: Exotic sounding callsigns from exotic sounding places, giant transmitters and receivers, AM vs SSB, Gus Browning, Dick McKercher, etc.

Danny, for the most part sailed solo to his many destinations, until he met his XYL Naomi. #She would join him on his voyages to such places as Clipperton (who's XYL would do that ?http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif).

If you really want to get an idea of the extent of Danny's adventures, buy YASME: The Danny Weil & Colvin Radio Expeditions by Jim Cain, K1TN. #Sit back, turn down the lights in the shack, tune your rig to 20, & travel back in time.

Thanks, Danny, for paving the way for today's Dx'peditions. #God Bless.

Very sorry to read about Danny's passing. #He was a true inspiration to many of us. #I remember vividly coming across his 40 meter signal from the Marquesas when he was signing FO8AN some 42 years ago. #I was a 14 year old aspiring DXer and was thrilled to have him come back to me when I was just running 75 watts to a dipole. #I followed his trip closely thereafter and vowed I would some day follow in his footsteps.

I wrote Danny a few months ago to tell him how much his adventure influenced my own aspirations. #Forty years after working him, I finally sailed my own boat from San Diego to Nuku Hiva and operated from Atuona. #

We're now in Auckland on a slow trip around the Pacific and beyond. #But, I still think about how difficult this same trip along the Coconut Milk Run was for Danny years ago before having the luxury of GPS, Winlink, electronic charting, etc. #Even today, its still an adventure. #But, you have to take your hat off to those who took this big step without all of today's modern conveniences.

Thanks, Danny, for the inspiration and the wonderful memories of your trip. #I'll always remember you, VP2VB, and the yawl Yasme.

Wednesday night I went to the service and learned more of Danny's life with Naomi and their dogs in San Antonio.

It was an open ceremony in which all were allowed to speak. #

I heard stories from radio operators that he inspired, his friends and neighbors.

I informed all that Danny was a pioneer and told them of the messages that I have received from around the world on the news of Danny’s passing. #

Photos and clippings were in the lobby. #The one that caught my eye was the Christchurch, New Zealand newspaper that had the front page headline “YASME EXPLODES”.

What a gentleman. #When something needed repairs he just did it. #He would find a schematic and fix it. #It could be a generator on his motor home, a plug at his friends Veterinarian Hospital or a drill from the neighbor across the street.

When a neighbor was having difficulty getting around after an injury, Danny would every day, without fail, place their newspaper and mail on their front porch. #

May we all live just a little of the “Weil” life.
