View Full Version : ICOM IC-2720H
This rig has problems right out of the box. The first issue is that the rig modulation level is very, very low. I had to yell to get anyone to even hear me. I finally found an adjustment to make it sort of hearable but still weak. Second, the manual is one of the worst I've ever seen. For example, the rig has cross band repeat but this is not even mentioned in the manual. I had to call to find out how to use it. Another example, the manual shows how to set band edges for scanning but never tells how to activate ths scan! I will be sending this radio back to the dealer and would not suggest it to anyone that is not interested in frustration or disappointments.

I am very surprised at this review. Especially so as I am considering selling my V-8000 to part pay for the 2720! Is there a mic gain on this one perhaps? Having had a few different Icom rigs over the past 18 months or so, I have found that the manual is if anything, very simple to read. Certainly if you know how to use one Icom rig, you should have no problems with another Icom model. I'll watch this thread with interest before making any move on the 2720 which is as shame as I really want a UHF/VHF Icom!

I've had one for about a year now in my WS6 t/a. #I have had no problems at all. I get very good signal and audio reports and have had no problems hitting any of the repeaters on 2m and 440. I've used the scan to listen to the some public service in the 800mhz band, but around here all the ps stuff is on a trunked system which jumps from channel to channel like a cell phone, so it's hard to follow. For Ham work its a great radio.
I have the unit in back with the power coming to the battery on one side of the car and the control cable on the other. The head is under the dash. I can make the whole radio invisible in under a minute.
I use a Comet SBB 5 dual band ant and it does a great job.

Read the manual.
There is a reset procedure you're supposed to do before you even start programming it. And it tells you where the mic level adjustment is in the menu system.
Had mine for 6 months, and the ONLY complaint I have is no alphanumerics. Otherwise it's a great rig.

Probably a great idea - when all else fails - READ THE MANUAL.........

I have had mine for 10 months now, and I like it a lot.
No problems, read and re-read the manual. Make sure you are not set to "narrow" on the left band, or your mic deviation is cut in half.
The cross band repeat function did not come in the manual, no, but I found it on line. At least its there!
No alphas, my only complaint.

After I had already bought the Icom IC-2720, I read the evaluations people had written. Some were good, many were bad.
I got the radio, tried it on the bench, it seemed to work, so I went to alot of trouble to remotely mount it and properly install it.
Well... I have to say it is the best radio I have ever owned. Very intuitive (I don't need the manual open in my lap to operate it), and it has every feature I've ever heard of (and some I haven't). It really is a true Dual bander. I haven't had a minutes trouble out of mine.
I usually listen to two different 2 meter repeaters at the same time. Or scan UHF and VHF while talking one one repeater. Or just put both sides on the same repeater for a stereo effect!
So if your looking for a good Dual bander, condsider that they may have the bugs worked out of the IC-2720.
For the low audio, try doing a re-set. I think that will fix your problem.
