Hello,
I recently purchased an Icom 706MKiig and after learning how to program the thing I have gotten it ready to install in my pickup. The area where I am wanting to mount it is a downward slanted section of the dash below the heater controls so the factory head mounting bracket alone is not going to work in this situation unless I want to crawl on the floor to see it. :)
I am looking at two different mounts:
AES MT-10 swivel mount (http://www.aesham.com/photos2/AESMT10.jpg)
or
AES MT-12 Universal mount (http://www.aesham.com/photos2/AESMT12.jpg)
Both mounts appear to be adhesive kits that should fit perfectly in my chosen spot.
Has anyone tried either/both of these mounts and if so could you recommend one over the other? I am going to be calling AES tomorrow to make my order so that it should arrive by the end of the week and allow me to get my new toy installed in the truck by this weekend.
I appreciate any and all replies.
Thanks
I wouldn't use either of the mounts you're looking at. The top of the dash, and the windshield are within reach of the passenger airbag.
There are a variety of floor mounts which will work. Most use a seat bolt, but some screw down.
Go to my web site, and bring up the Radio Mounts article. Look at the airbag photo too.

Thank you for the reply, but I guess I was not clear in my original post.
The mounts I gave pictures of were examples of the mounts I was looking at. The actual mounting location will be on the underside of the dash in my 2001 Chevy Silverado. I have enclosed a picture with the yellow arrow pointing to the proposed mounting location.
I also leave the passenger air bag turned off in my vehicle most of the time. 69432
thanks again
A couple of things.
Depending on the year, the passenger airbag (they really aren't filled with air!) won't go off is no one is in the seat.
It appears to be some sort of separate dash piece. If it is, it can't be that expensive to replace. It is relatively easy to make a bracket, and screw it to the piece.
I recently looked through a bunch of accident photos taken by the local fire department. The photo on my web page showing the torn up dash, is a mild example in comparison to some I looked at. Heck, the airbag cause more damage than the crash in some cases.

Icom has a swivel mount with adhesive base as well. I've been using one for over 9 years.
Bill I think that should read "HAD" a mount. I don't think I've seen a new one for some time. PanaVise makes a really good one, but the base is a bit big. The last time I used one, I bought a cheap camera tripod, like those that fit on your desktop web cam. Worked just fine for the several years I used it.

Lido Mounts has all kinds of mounting options, including one that fastens to the seat bolts and another that fits in the cup holder...

I recently bought one. It is one large hideous lump compared to the Kenwood one. Sure you can position it just about in any direction whereas the Kenwood one merely has a tilt but the thing is huge.

It isn't going anywhere once you put it in place, that's for sure. Mine has an adhesive base as big as my hand. It's what I think is needed to keep the control head in place during an accident. shrug.
I use a Lido LoBoy LM-600 mount in my 2005 Silverado for an FT-7900 remote head in much the same place as your picture shows.
I use the LM-300 floor seat bolt mount for a IC-706 Mk2 remote head.
This is an older pic with a different dual bander;

Check out a company called Ram Mounts (sorry, don't have the link handy). I have used them for a sonar/gps unit on my boat. They have very high quality, but pricey mounts.

There are several reasons I don't like stick on mounts. First, folks tend to stick them to the top of the dash, where the passenger airbag can collide with them. No matter the glue used, they will be ripped off, along with a chunk of the dashboard padding.
But there is an esoteric issue to, that has to do with the surface they're stuck to. Universally, that is plastic, and for the most part, some form of vinyl. Vinyl contains more than just a polymer, and some chlorine. Added to the basic PVC are other materials like coloring agents, strengtheners, and molding agents. These agents tend to weep from the vinyl especially in the presents of high temperatures (hot summer day with the windows rolled up). When they do, these agents reduce the adhering ability of the glue holding on whatever it is. Sooner or later, they just fall off, and sticking them back on is all but futile. At least in the same spot.
Someone also mentioned cup holder mounts. One of those available can be screwed down. You remove the pad at the bottom of the cup holder, and screw it on. Once you pull everything back out, the piece of rubber it replaced, and you never know the mount was there. But the others are all either wedged in, or glued in. They are not the stuff of champions!

I'll second the RAM mount suggestion. I'm using one in a similar location on an 05 F150 that was also originally for a sonar unit. Adjustable for any angle, but SOLID when locked down. I think the even have different lengths (heights) of mounts and the possibility of multi-armed mounts. Like the cops use for lap-top computers.
