C6ANI is loud on 244 ... the GI0 is readable ... but 247.5 is loud ... Bud, K7RMT is really pounding in here... (used to talk with him on the CCA nets several years ago..

Looks like Pat's APRS is only partly functional but appears that he has about 350 miles to go before he hits the Mississippi River.
Is that still higher and wider than it should be? Maybe he should stop for some pontoons...

Keep going, Pat. Only 180 miles to Exit 277B, your closest White Castle.
Just think, if Pat needs to rent a scooter to explore the fleamarket, after eating those WC's, maybe he can get a discount on one with a broken horn.

His last position report at 1558Z, he was in Strafford, MO travelling 68MPH. By now, he should be in Devil's Elbow, MO. And with the larger communities ahead of him, we should start seeing more frequent beacons.
Maybe he stopped to grill some Top Ramen? :D
Now showing him on I-44 St Roberts Mo. as W6D-9. However nothing heard...
KC8VWM
05-17-2011, 05:31 PM
Travelling through MO is bad for APRS and even VHF radio communication in some areas for that matter cause there are so many mountains, valleys and other issues along the way. I note this especially when travelling between Springfield and St. Louis. Even my cellphone has problems maintaining a connection until you get closer to St. Louis. I think it's just the local terrain.

My kids were born in L.A. and call the midwest "all those square states with no beach.";)
:D :D
I don't see as well without my contact lens these days so along with the pollution down here I have reason to stay away from the water. :)
I was diving in San Diego Bay in the 1970's and 80's and it's a lot cleaner now than it was back then.
K2XT broke in to ask about Pat's APRS ... Pat says he is getting no GPS signals ... which in itself is strange ... but that expalins why no APRS at the moment ... he is payimng a toll just out of the US 69 exit to Big Cabin ?? Looks like maybe 45 minutes or so to MO...!
Signals fair but now picking up some QRM from 7197..
Late note .... APRS is going up and down with GPS signal loss ...
Sue ...still on 40 ... about 7191.5 ... if you want to try 20 we can ... he is starting to drop on 40 here...
Sue ... we are going to 20.... I probably won't hear him ... but you might ....
Going to 14245 ... not sure if I will hear him .... he was fair with QSB on 40..
I'm tracking both W6D and WA6MHZ and at one point they seemed to be about a half mile apart. They're pretty close together now so he must be getting better GPS signals.

Thanks Brad. I did call you once. You went to another station that must have been much louder.
Then I went to look for Europe stations.
If you are using aprs.fi to track Pats APRS we need to do some analysis of the problem he is having.
Over on the right side of your screen there is "Other views, Raw packets".
If you click on that and then look at "Show 300 " you will see a LOT of problems occuring on the time he was traveling out of Tulsa this morning, when he was not showing up. Here's a sample:
2011-05-17 12:56:34 UTC: W6D-9>APT311,TCPIP*,qAS,wd0ajg-1:!0000.000/00000.000>000/000/A=000000/TinyTrak3 [Invalid uncompressed location]

I hate this laptop, Press ONE WRONG KEY and all I typed goes away.
I had a whole report and I hit the WRONG key and it Vanished!!!
OK, I will try to type it again.
The GPSs are FUBAR! I don't know what happened. But the Garmin and the 2 APRS Tracker GPSs won't lock up to the sats. OH, they do SOMETIMES, but not consistantly like they did before I left Tulsa. There was no lightning, so I can't explain what happened. I just took off everything and tossed them in the trunk last night, so the gang boys wouldn't rip it off, and
this morning they didn't work anymore. It acts like there are no GPS Sats over the midwest. I don't know what to think. I have transmitted PLENTY of 20M and 40M all along the way with no problems. The only NEW thing I transmitted on was 223.5, and I woudn't think THAT could kill all 3 GPSs. Only a 30W 223 unit, nothing special. But most of the way today, there were no fixes. Sucks. How could they kill the Garmin too, it is on the dashboard???
Anyway, this morning I was surprized by a visitor from Tulsa, Who met me at the Motel room. He was most friendly and cordial, a really nice guy, and he has been following the W6D Saga on QRZed. He is working on getting his license so he can join us and work W6D next time.
Also met another Ham at a gas station in OK City. Oklahoma is a very friendly state!!!
OK I will work on the pix. Atleast I got the internet working. Something is FISHY with the Motel 6 one and I gotta complain about that. The room is nice though. Wish it came with a GIRL, LOL!
Free SHOWTIME, racy late night Movies!! How will I get any sleep?
THANKS SO MUCH to all those who rode along with me, especially AE1P, WM3O, W0LPQ and KF7AMY. Plus all the others who so patiently waited on me to get across the country. Don't have the 1st half stats as the GPS holding the data is belly up.
I need to shop for ANOTHER GPS now at Dayton.

After a good nights sleep, I tried the GPSs again and NO GO!!! All 3 seem to be Blown! The only thing I can think is that there is a Harmonic of 223.5 that was strong enough to take out the preamps in the active antennas. That sure doesn't seem likely but I have no other explanation. That is the only thing I can think of. that is the only thing different that wasn't done anytime the rest of the trip. The Cellphone GPS was disabled during the time I made the contact on 223, and it still works. In fact, it ran my battery down last night because I didn't shut it off. Good thing I brought my charger. So today, I need to search for a FRYS in Dayton and buy another GPS. That will set me back another couple hundred bucks. And at the Flea Market, I need to find an Active antenna for GPS and also another Tripmate.
The only other explanation is that the GPS Sats were shut off for some reason, which seems HIGHLY Unlikely. There would be a WORLDWIDE PANIC if we had to do without GPS. I wondered if there was a Terrorist threat that caused the GOVT to suddenly disable GPS because some bomb was GPS enabled. Has anyone else noticed anything fishy with GPS?
So, APRS is DOWN until I get the GPS's repaired. I am hoping it is the Active antenna as I can buy another of those. It was cheap on Ebay. If the GPS board itself is shot, that will be more pricey. The Tripmate will be almost impossible to find, as it is highly coveted and very obsolete.
I am at the Motel today, and will probably go to the Air Force Museum once I figure out what to do about the GPS stuff.
Meanwhile, this is DOWN time for W6D, until again on Sunday, when we will be back on the road again, Pedal to the metal, headed towards San Diego on a REAL Cannonball run so I can hurry back and GET BACK TO WORK!!! They are upset I took off THIS many days!

The GOOD news is that the APRS Trackers and Garmin "GOT BETTER". It seems that RF must be resetting the GPSs in them, and they never get a fix when I talk on HF or VHF. Today both trackers gave me solid perfect tracks, along with the Garmin dashboard unit driving all over Dayton. So I musta yakked more yesterday and that hosed the trackers.
Hmmm, don't know WHAT to do about that......
Today I went to the biggest Junk store in the World, Mendelsons. A Junk store the size of a WALMART!!! The building is 8 stories high, don't know what is in the other 6 floors, but they have only 2 open to the public. Every part a homebrewer ever needed, I NEED a junk store like this in San DIego!!! Dayton homebrewing Hams are LUCKY!!
Next I went to the Air Force Museum, and it is 100% different than I remember it back in 1980. This is a FIRST CLASS Museum, on the order of the Smithsonian, if not better. A definite MUST SEE for anyone coming to Dayton. But I got worn out walking it, and my heart started fluttering like I was close to a Heart attack. TOO MUCH walking for me, but fortunately, they have lotsa chairs for old codgers like me to sit down in. Not a Luxury that they will have a the Hamvention!!!
On the way back to the Motel, I scored another TEN White Castles and a giant BIG RED, which is Cream Soda. I am going to eat a RECORD NUMBER of White Castles over the next few days, until I am SICK of them. Not cheap either. I paid $8.44 for this meal. But then, I only have ONE meal a day too.

It's real bad, actually.
I've spent hours of my life wiping viruses clean, although I must admit with AVG and NOD32, this hasn't been much of a problem lately.
My kids used to open any old e-mail, and that caused a lot of problems in the past. In one case I had to reformat the hard drive and start from scratch. One virus was so invasive it disabled the BIOS and I had to re-load that.
Who the hell has time to write all this junk?
I am not sure but you may be able to boot to safe mode and use a virus scanner from a thumb drive or floppy disc or boot just to the prompt and use one designed to work at that level.

Pat has a couple of options.
1.) Back up his data and reload the operating system from the hidden partition.
2.) Back up his data and reload the operating system from his hidden partition.
Modern mailware plants seeds in the registry among other places....
BTW...
I remember reading about your virus that alters the Bios, the space is used to reload the virus if it has been removed. There was also a proof of concept hack that would load a virus from infected DVD-RW or CD-RW firmware. Even the Video card Bios is not safe.
The best defense IS ALWAYS AN EDUCATED USER.

I bet it was XP-Security--looks exactly like a Windows notice and harrasses you every few seconds. That's a nasty one. I had that couple weeks ago. Fortunately, I was suspicious enough to google it and verify it was a trojan horse. And, yes, it had contaminated the registry. Spyware Doctor kicked its butt.

Yep, it was XP-Security, and I tried everything until I played with regedit. But everytime I would delete it from the registry and then go delete it in task manager, it would just go and re-write it back. Then I accidently deleted the part of the registry which involves .exe files. That halted the virus, but then I couldn't execute the Malwarebytes installer. Luckily, Internet Explorer still worked and I was able to go to Windows HELP files and find out how to renew the registry to an earlier time. Now, everything works except for some pesky thing that causes what I type to jump back a sentence while I am typing every few seconds. I have to stop and correct what I am typing and go where I want to be again. I don't know what that could be, but
it has been happening for a long time on this. Even when I type slow it will automatically jump back some random amount and
Mess up what I have just typed. What could cause that??

Now, everything works except for some pesky thing that causes what I type to jump back a sentence while I am typing every few seconds. I have to stop and correct what I am typing and go where I want to be again. I don't know what that could be, but
it has been happening for a long time on this. Even when I type slow it will automatically jump back some random amount and
Mess up what I have just typed. What could cause that??
Almost time to get ready to go over to the Hara Arena
Being not a computer tech, but an operator-typist who can confidently punch the "Go Advanced" button, I don't know what would cause such a jumpback--another virus, I suppose. Might take another registry purge.
Not so long ago my daughter went to one of those dating websites. She claims she did not download anything but there was a full screen thing saying “Your computer is infected with a virus. Run our free scan now to fix it”
You couldn’t do anything at all with it, eventually one of the many times I rebooted it I was able to get it to come up in safe mode and download the free AVG software. Once that was on the machine it offered me a free registry scan which I ran.
That konked the bogus anti virus crap a good one and I have not seen it since.
Being a Mac user, it is funny to see that stuff come up. It happened to my wife once and she asked me, why does this look like Windows? I told her to close the window.
I can see how it will dupe folks on Windows boxes.
I use AVG Free on my Windows 7 box and iAntiVirus on my Mac. So far so good.

Just be careful there are a half dozen virus and malware out there that target Macs.
The vast majority of the Windows crowd is street smart and won't get sucked into some "human engineering" (hacker term for conning the user into willingly accepting a program download or script execution.)

You need to reinstall the operating system Pat.
Best one that happened to me, years ago:
Before the days of real WiFi, cable modems, DSL etc. I had an ISDN line installed at my home (1998), that was the slick new broadband over telephone wires.
Had to buy an ISDN modem. Bought a shiny new Motorola one, spent the next four hours trying to get the damned thing to install. Some sort of firmware conflict was preventing that. So I call the Motorola "800" number tech support hot line, which plays a recording stating if you need to update firmware, go to their website and download it.
Now, if you don't have a modem that works, how the hell ya gonna do that?

Good old ISDN That was something like 118KB both directions.
That was the hot setup back than.
I was living here in the nineties and in ninety-six COX was beginning their cable internet rollout here and we got in the waiting list, a year later we had our Cable Internet. We both were hard core online gamers and it was like we had died and gone to heaven. Latency on our favorite servers went from 125ms down to 8ms. :)

The best Mac virus I have ever seen was the cockroach virus. Now this is going back about 15 years ago or more, but it was quite funny.
A friend called to say he had a cockroach running around inside the computer screen on his new Apple. I told not to worry, it was probably some sort of screen saver thing. He called me the next day and said now there were 3 cockroaches running around. By the time I got over there the following day he had about 10 roaches running around. At that point we knew he had a problem. By the end of the week there were hundreds of cockroaches running around and the monitor was totally obscured by the bugs.
We ended up formatting the drive and reinstalling all the software to get rid of the virus. About a week later the virus was made public and apple had fix for it.
As much as I and every one else hates these viruses, we did get a good laugh watching the cockroaches multiply hourly.

There was also a version of that floating around that infected quite a few PCs as I remember it.

I was always told that if an address began with http:// - THAT IS THE INTERNET !!!!!

Sad news to report for the W4D Four Land Trek to the Dayton Hamvention.
First, my buddy, copilot, and fellow ham Charles had to bow out of the trip at the last minute due to a family matter. Nothing serious, thankfully, but just one of those things that that take precidence over a hamfest. I told him not to fret over it, there will be other hamgest trips.
Worst though, was my HF antenna failure. It is a purely mechanical problem, but it renders the antenna 100% unusable until fixed -- can't even leave it on the car, ARRRGGGHHH! So I sighed deeply and waited til today and drove on up to Dayton by the shortest route (8.5 hours from Charlotte) rather than the planned grand saunter through all the states in the four-call district. I arrived at my Hotel this afteroon.
Oh, I did get a call last week signing me up to volunteer in the Hamvention Flea Market, so I scored the free admission ticket AND (best of all) the on site parking pass! I signed up online offerin as a volunteer about four months back, but got called Friday night. Iguess good things come to those who wait.
I'll stop by the the ARRL booth to harrass (oops, meet) you as soon as I can, Pat. I hope to bump into ALL of you guys who make it to the Hamvention. Say hi if you spot me. I'm quite ugly  and look approximately like this:

Where can I get this game? I'm a HUGE Trekkie fan :D
Good luck finding a copy. Elite Force 2 is an even better game with a better story line. However, both of them sell for more on Ebay used than they were when new. I sold Elite Force 1 and 2 in a combo a few years back on Ebay and got $100 for it. I only paid $20 each for them new. I also sold Star Trek: Starfleet Command 3 on Ebay at the same time, and got $75 for it.
But, if you can find any of the above they are great games. Elite Force 1 and 2 are story based first person shooters with online play and are right up there with Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament in terms of play ability.

Now I remember seeing this XP-Security window pop up on my screen when I clicked an amateur radio link from a poster here on QRZ. My first thought was WTF, my second thought was I've never seen this before as I sat there looking at it a small screen in the corner or the computer screen came on from ADVAST antivirus stating that a virus had been detected and was now locked up!
I can see how XP-Security can trick the inexperienced, the clue it's a fake is the screen is too fancy! Not to mention I'd never heard of it before. :p

I found out a MAJOR PERK for being a Hamvention volunteer. You can get into the Swapmeet EARLY!! I rolled right through while others had to stand outside till 8AM to get in.
I made very good use of that time. In the town Car trunk are a Swan TOO DRIFTY C, along with AC Supply/Speaker, mike and spare tubes, all for $100!!!
Also is a Drake R4C, in "MAYBE I CAN FIX IT" Condition for $100!! All it needs is a new Tuning knob. Should be some of those around.
Eating White Castles #31-40. I am starting to get SICK of White Castles!!

Then there was this clown who had a Rusted hulk of a Johnson Viking Valiant. I tried to move it, but it was too heavy. So I asked him what he wanted for it. He said "A BUCK FIFTY"!
OH GREAT!!! I will pay $1.50 for it!!! He got mad and said he meant $150!!!!
I ran away SCREAMING!!!!!
Now I know how those people who eat 600 hot dogs feel. BLAAAAAHHHHH!!!!
But I PROMISED to eat 60 of these White Castles, and SIXTY I WILL EAT!!!!
Also in the trunk is an ANC-4 noise blanker to replace the P.O.S. MFJ one I paid $200 for and is completely USELESS. A Shure 444 mike will go nicely with the Drake R4C and the existing T4X I already have.
I did see a beatiful Hallicrafters SX-115, but he wanted (GULP!!!!!) THIRTEEN HUNDRED BUCKS for it. What does he think this is, EBAY???
The Big Red is good to wash down the White Castles. Some friends from San Diego stopped there to see what all the FUSS was about, and they were APALLED!!!! I told them it was an "ACQUIRED TASTE". Just like Gin. The first few sips it seems like drinking Battery Acid!!
Then, on to the ARRL BOOTH I went, and stayed there for the Duration of the day, except for some quick forays into the inside vendors. I got the 4 AA Nicads I needed for the Startek Freq counter.

In the Kit Building booth, more XYLs and Kids learned how to solder today. That was fun. this year, they have a little receiver.
I am really bummed out about Jason getting his ATLS-120 HF Antenna ripped off at Hooters. It was parked only a few spaces away from the Town Car. The Rotten RB who did that needs to be CASTRATED!!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel so bad for Jason, it just ruined the whole Dayton experience for him. It REALLY SUCKS BIGTIME!!!!!!
4 more cold clammy White Castles to go. I SURE Hope I win the Yaesu FTdx5000 for this. I got to play with a Yaesu FT-2000 in the W8BI Hamvention station, and cracked a roaring pileup to A41OO in Oman last night. I NEED one of these radios!!
OK, lotsa PIX coming so watch for an update to the W6D PIX thread!

Didn't see any SR-150s in those pix though. Will be out there in another 6 hours or so, after I saw a few more Zs. I didn't do too bad at walking today, will hope tomorrow is even better. Then, Sunday is the COAST day, where most of the Flea market vendors have bailed except for a few die hards, and folks wanting to just get RID of junk. I like those folks! Not too much room left in the Town Car trunk though. Room for a SR-150, and the HW-8, but NOT a Valiant. Do have some back seat room though. a coupla boxes of junk will fit there.
Hope all the other Hamventioners enjoyed their STEAKS and PRIME RIB tonight. I wish I had brought along some TUMS after those White Castles!!! But for EVERY Steak purchased, that is ONE ARC-5 or ONE junker radio that has to be PASSED on.

I need to find where WA9ZTY is to see if one of those Lunchboxes he has on the top shelf is a TENNER.
http://i340.photobucket.com/albums/o354/wa4brl/2011%20Dayton%20Hamvention/572.jpg
He's near the end of an aisle of the west flea-market, near the northwest corner of the main arena, perhaps across from ther food tent. This would be spot 1503 & 1504, or maybe the next aisle, spots 1903 & 1904. See page 21 of the Hamvention Bible, er, program.
Hope all the other Hamventioners enjoyed their STEAKS and PRIME RIB tonight.
I just stopped at an Arby's on the way back to the Hotel. Boy I really scarfed down that big sandwich. I was famished! The three-dollar hot dog for lunch at the hamfest hadn't stuck with me very long.
All I'm looking for now is an Eico 717 keyer (and perhaps a matching speaker for my Knight-Kit R-100A). I didn't see either today, and I made it through the whole magilla. I'm hoping some vendors will be there who didn't make if for Friday, but that means working through the whole flea-bag market AGAIN today (!) and my dogs is already barkin' !!!
Off to bed again...

Pat, I just thought to look at the original hi-res photo -- zoomed in, I could read the front panels. The lunch boxes are (left-to-right) CB, Twoer, Twoer, Sixer, and Twoer.
No Tenner. Sorry.

Just got woken up by my sore legs and back. Figured I'd hit the 'Zed while wait for the aspirin to dissolve...

I stopped by and talked to them. I just need to figure out a way to make an interface to use the FT857D to connect to it. I will need to save my pennies to get it.

Plenty of Photos from today coming, if the internet holds up.
It is 3:08 (CA Time) and the Hamvention day is over. All the Hams are on thier way to nice LUXURY Dinners tonight. ALL, except one that is. Yep, as you might have guessed, it is time for White Castles 41-50. I want some PRIME RIB SO BAD!!!!!
But today was a quite sucessful day. The Town Car trunk is LOADED with Priceless Artifacts ready for Museum service.
I got the the Flea Market at 7AM just as promised, but there was ONE LITTLE HITCH I didn't realize. The DAYTON Flea Market sellers like to SLEEP IN!!!!! Most didn't arrive till right around 7:45-8AM!!!! Lightweights!!!! At Chino Hills, we start at O-Dark Thirty and I am DONE SHOPPING and on my way back towards San Diego by 7:30!!!! Guess they partied too HEARTY Friday night!
So I walked around in a nearly EMPTY swapmeet till almost 8, when they DID start to trickle in.
the clown with the $300 taken-apart Kenwood TS-940S was a NO Show!
I did see one of the items I sought, a Gonset G-76. The seller wanted (OMG!!!!) over $300 for it. So all I got of that was a Picture!
I spied an Eico 717 Keyer Steve WA4BRL was so desperately searching for, and tried to call up QRZed on my cellphone. Verizon SUCKS at Hara Area! But I did get through to Leif who emailed Steve. A few minutes after that, who should come walking up the aisle I was on but STEVE HIMSELF, so I quickly had him RUN over to booth 505 and score the 717. Then, as I nonchalantly eased down the vacant aisle, I saw something that stopped me DEAD in my tracks. But then I burst into a RUN, to make it to the stall before any other RB could!!!!
Yessem, just one Aisle over was the NUMBER ONE item on my Dayton Shopping list, A HALLICRAFTERS SR-150!!!!
About the same time, I happened upon Rick K2XT and we talked about the 150 as I kept a close lookout for other potential buyers.
The seller wanted $300 for it, along with the nice Matching AC supply, manual and mike. He noted it didn't work. That didn't phase me. I threw down $200 on the table, but he wouldn't take it. He eased down to $250. Getting closer.
$225??? OK, he bit on that, and JOYFULLY Loaded the works into my little Airport cart and box.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Still short was the Hallicrafters Mobile Speaker and the Murata CFJ455K5 filter. Also now needed a Drake R4C tuning knob. Those would not be found.
But later on in the day, Jason N8XE came to the Kit Building booth and presented me with a nice Heathkit HW-8. One more item DESPERATELY SOUGHT crossed off the list, and at a very nice price too!!!
I would not leave the booth for the remainder of the day, except to go WEE WEE.
I had planned on going to 4:30 PM Mass tonight, but that was canceled. I can only go to 8AM Mass tomorrow morning, which means NO FLEA MARKET tomorrow. Thats OK, I spent ENOUGH money!!!! Atleast I am saving bucks by eating White Castles!
(#41-45 gone now! 5 to go!)
So, tommorrow will DO IT for Dayton 2011, and then it will be a CANNONBALL RUN back to San Diego! I have to hurry to get the ARTIFACTS back to safe harbor!!!
Many happy builders now have new working kits.
Hope all the other Hamventioneers are enjoying their PRIME RIB tonight!
I am SO SICK of White Castles!!!!! 4 to go for tonight
