The Alinco DJ-596T is a very good radio. #I have had one for about 1 year now, and have found it very easy to use, and all-together an excellent radio. #Just thought I would recommend this radio to anyone who is looking for a good and rugged 2m/70cm HT without all the "bells and whistles" of other models that run up the cost.

Sorry to jump in and seem negative but this handheld is the most fragile and non rugged handheld I have ever seen. I have had mine for 1 year now and a good friend has had his for almost 8 months and we both have the same complaints.
1. The antenna connector will come loose if you look at is crosseyed. Sure it is easy to fix but still apin in the butt.
2. The battery connector is really a great idea. If the belt clip is hooked to you you feel pretty safe right? Not me. The second you bump it on any object more solid that jello the radio itself actually falls of while the battery stays safely attached to you belt.
3. Along the same lines as the battery connector falling off it also does not make a good connection. As soon as I got it I had to "FIX" the little tabs that make contact so that the radio actually got power.
My friend and I do lots of hiking and biking an have had our handhelds all over the country from coast to coast. Perhaps the radio does ok if it gets to sit at home but any rugged use and don't expect much happiness with it.
