View Full Version : HRD Timeout
I'm trying to help a friend set up HRD to a FT-900. We are connecting the computer to the radio with a USB cable and it works except that it will stay connected for about 5 seconds and then time out for 5 seconds. Anyone have any experience with this problem?

Hello,
i have the same problem. I use a USB-CAT Cabel.
I also have a serial-cable and an usb2serial converter without a problem!
So, what cable do you use?

This is a common problem with the USB adapters that use the Prolific chipset.
I'm having the same problem with an Ultra USB to RS232 and according to the Tiger Direct site it uses the Prolific chipset. Other cable on their site don't list the chipset. Does anyone have a cable that works without timing out that is available from TigerDirect (or similar) that they can recommend?

I have found cables that use the FTDI Chipset - has anyone had success with this chipset?

I have an older Tripp-Lite USB to DB9 adapter that seems to play well with HRD and my FT-450D under XP. As far as I know, this adapter is still available and at last check they had drivers for the newer Windows versions as well. Street price is around $28 or less.
If you can get the vendor ID for the adapter you are considering, many times you can Google for additional info and discover which chipset it has. This also works for things that you can't find drivers for, just be very wary of some of these driver download sites that offer other "free" software when you download the drivers.
My new cable with the FTDI Chipset works like a champ as you predicted - thanks very much for the help.

It is the ONLY USB chipset that I have used (past decade) ... no issues ... that give you a clue?
