View Full Version : Finally logged Australia.

Made an SSB contact with Australia and it was on 10 meters with 100 watts no less. Love those sunspots. VK4MA is in the log. :):) That made my day.

Yep, I worked him too. He was nice and loud today. Looked at his QRZ page, and that's a nice beam he's got.

I finally got through to North America with my 10w yesterday, thanks to VE3YJ at the other end, and a bit of patience on both our sides of the Atlantic. And tonight I built my first ever project in ham radio (for my Intermeadiate course), a simple AM radio, and I turned it on and blow me down it works!!!

Oh no! You worked VK4MA. Don't let the curmudgeons know, but that was a contest QSO. Heaven forfend that anyone actually enjoy the fact that they worked DX in a contest!

Me too, except I worked VK4VW. Also 10m without my amp. Made my day also ;-)

Yeah some people dont like contest but I worked ZL3IQ from New Zealand yesterday on 10 Meter. What a great contact 8554 miles away with 100 watts and a 25' vertical. I would have to think the sun has awakened. I was also listening on 12 meter and was getting 20 over from many stations here in SE Michigan. It can only get better. 73, Jim !!

An hour after the contest was our regular 10-10 net. VK4XX checked in from Tasmania, the only non-local to check in. All 10 of us on the net worked him from North Texas. I like a challenge, so I turned down to 5 watts, no problem. I do have a small (TH-3JRS) beam at 35' but still that's only 20 watts ERP. When it's open, it's a GREAT band. The CQ WW DX contest and this weekend's WPX contest saw really great conditions. Hope the peak is higher than the predictions, I would love to see it open all the time, not just sporadic E season.

Good Job! Nice contact. I have heard Australia a few times, still haven't been fortunate enough to be able to log a contact though...

Ha, I finally got my first VKs this past weekend too. VK2IM on 40m and VK4KW on 15m. Got ZL2GQ for my first NZ on 15m as well. All of those with 100w on a random wire about 15ft off the ground at its highest point. Not my best bands, as my actual resonant antennas are both cut for 20m (a dipole and a wire vertical).

Gosh darn those contests anyway.

I logged VK4KW, VK4NM and ZL3IO on 10 meters this weekend during the contest, also with just 100 watts and my carolina windom 40. But my biggest thrill was logging B7P in China on 15 meters: only my second ever contact in China. (The first was BD4QH, also on 10 meters.)

Too bad I'll never be able to put a beam up on my apartment building. :(

But my biggest thrill was logging B7P in China on 15 meters

Nice. I heard him on 40m but out of band (he was down in the CW portion) and then on 15m but just couldn't make it happen.

Nice to know you got over the pond on 10 watts, my, but it is a struggle and the band conditions aren't helping. I see tonight its 115 and A1 K1 but these figures mean nothing when the QSB is taking signals away, I was trying today to make a contact in the Russian Far East in Baikalsk, by Lake Baikal but it was impossible he was weak another Russian jumped in and then he just got weaker and vanished. There's still a long way to go before conditions even get to being half decent. After a contest, the 5 kw amplifiers get put away and the operators don't appear till the next contest

Its a struggle certainly with the antenna I am limited to - but I am having fun anyway. Have had some great QSOs in the last few weeks, and in a few more weeks fingers crossed I'll be a 2 callsign and might be able to use a little more power to help people hear me. Its all fun.

Great to hear all these Ops working VK and ZL using modest power levels and equipment. Can't wait to get my G5RV Jr. back up. Well done again everyone!

Kind Regards

VK4XX checked in from Tasmania,
That was VK7XX. Just for your log correction.

VK4MA is in the log. :):) That made my day.

That suffix is a winner. :)

Good job guys last weekend was great for DX the VK and ZL's were there 24/7 during the contest I still remember my first contact to VK what a great feeling a 20m one for me.

Last weekend I worked VK/ZL on 10-80m but I have not worked them ever on 160 or 6m but have antennas for both guess I need to improve them. There are some awesome stations down there also I'm just getting setup for a little EME on 6/2m a little pistol will be my first time for weak signal work will use JT65 new world for me.

It sounds like all of you are on your way to DXCC good luck to all and be sure to sign up for LoTW on ARRL website for your contacts check it out Logbook of The World counts for all ARRL awards DXCC, WAS etc.

I'm not signed up for anything Fred, well not at the moment anyway. Its just for my own personal satisfaction, when I turn off the radio I have a little smile on my face and a spring in my step! :-)
