Linux Repeater Controller ?

I'm getting an idea that I would like to build a 2 meter repeater.

has anyone built a repeater controller using
a cheap PC running Linux?
Could this be done using serial/parallel ports?
or would it be better to use one or more soundblaster type cards?

I dont know know much about radio yet, but i have a lot of knowledge concerning computers, your idea of a cheap linux repeater is feasible however, youd have to find a program that a linux writer has written and i would use a serial connection.
