View Full Version : What Type of Award Would You Want to Receive?

I have a question for everyone. If you wanted to receive an award for something that you acomplished through working Amateur Satellites, what would you want to be awarded for (ie. work 100 grids, work 1,000 grids, work 100 different prefixes, work all birds, etc., etc.)? Keep in mind it would be something that is not specific to the US (ops in other countries have to be able to qualify as well) and it can't tie up the complete resources of a satellite (ie. 500 QSOs on AO51 on December 31).
The reason behind my asking this... I am working with Bruce, KK5DO with AMSAT at coming out with a new award to add to the awards that AMSAT has. While I have a few ideas, I would like to see if some new ideas/opinions come up here.

Working sats outside in the snow? The SnowGlobe Award?
But honestly I have no idea, there's a lot of awards out there, it's a fun challenge to get them.

That might be a hard one for someone who lives in FL....
Jim, you had mentioned that CQ magazine (???) gave out sat awards. Could you provide me with whatever site or link you referred to? I remember having this conversation a few weeks back somewhere in this forum.

I think it was this I was referring to in K6LCS awards thread:

QRP International has satellite awards:

No snow in Florida? Those poor people.

AMSAT has offered several awards over the years. And you do not need 100 contacts to get award-ed for your accomplishments: a single documented satellite contact qualifies you for the AMSAT Satellite Communicator's Club award!
Current and past AMSAT awards include ...
-Satellite Communicator's Club
-Satellite Communications Achievement
-South African AMSAT Award
-OSCAR Sexagesimal Award
-OSCAR Century Award
-WA4AMI 1000 Award
-WA4AMI 5000 Award
-51 on 51 Achievment Award
Details on the AMSAT awards available at ... http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/awards/
In addition, the ARRL recognizes satellite efforts, too, with their WAC, DXCC, WAS, and VUCC awards.
-Worked All Continents Award (WAC) - Make one satellite contact with any station on each of the six continents.
-DXCC Award with Satellite Endorsement - Make one satellite contact with any station in 100 different DXCC countries.
-Worked All States Award - Make one satellite contact with any station in each of the 50 states.
VHF/UHF Century Club Award - Make one satellite contact with any station in 100 different grid squares. Endorsements for each additional 25 grid squares.

Hams like certificates. Or paperweights. Maybe a special graphic "logo" to place on our Web sites would be cool.

Sure: How about a "Far West" award for contacts in all of the states, or a certain number of grids in the region west of the "Continental Divide".
Similarly a Mason/Dixon award, Eastern Seaboard award.. Breadbelt/Midwestern award. East and West of the Missippi awards? Regional awardes could be mapped.
How about one for working all of the grids within any given state?
and of course a special award for "holding an HT in one hand, an atenna in the other, mouth held to the left, & standing on one foot while working a pileup".;)

Those are good ideas, but it needs to be something that Amateurs worldwide can receive. Europeans would have a difficult time working all states on AO51.;)

I think the snow globe is the best one so far. :D some one needs to make that.

I thought the 51 Contacts on AO-51 Award was kinda cool until I read a bit further and found that AMSAT doesn't issue that one anymore? They could bring it back and Award it for 51 Grids worked on AO-51. A simple award that would be half way to VUCC, though the 51 contacts would be specific to one Satellite.
Just a thought.:)

That's the best idea yet. It would require a little more work on the applicants part to sort their QSO by satellite, but I think that might be neat!

I was considering seeing if they could do the 51 on 51 again, but I like grids instead of contacts. There would probably need to be a starting date (ie. all QSOs must be dated Jan 1st 2011 or later). There would probably be no need for an end dat, however. I am sure I have worked 51 grids on AO51 before. It might also be nice to do it in steps - 51 on AO51, 100 on AO51, 150, 200.....

How about an award for outliving George Burns?
