Hi there,

I'm off on holiday soon. My current license doesn't allow me to transmit via the radio while abroad, however since Echolink doesn't actually send radio waves (at least from where I am) I should be able to use it OK. My plan is to find echolink connected repeaters in the cities that I visit (Tokyo, Honolulu, Los Angeles, and anywhere on the Big Island of Hawaii) and use those to talk to the locals. Almost like being really local, but with the radio bit going over a cellular network instead of amateur :P

With that in mind, I started searching for echolink connected repeaters in those cities...and I've not been able to find any at all. Do they just not exist in those places? If so then fine - I'll have my VX2 with me and I'll just use it to listen to the local hams. But it would be nice to talk back...

Anyone know of echolink connected repeaters in Tokyo, in Honolulu, on the Bis Island, or in LA?

Cheers,

-simon

Yes, they have many in Japan, but I can only find 1 in Hawaii.
If you have Google Earth installed use this, http://www.echolink.org/node_location.kmz

Check the Echolink web site (http://echolink.org/links.jsp).

You can find links by Grid Square, City and State, Nation, etc.

You might connect to them before you go. You might make a friend or two that way. <G>

Oh superb, somehow I didn't find that! Searching by grid square works great, many thanks. Unfortunately it seems like there's no repeater connected on Oahu (just one simplex station) where I'll be spending the majority of my holiday, but there is one on the big island which I'll try!

Simplex Stations are more then meets the eye. Some simplex stations are linked to repeaters. But since the callsign of the link station and the callsign of the repeater is different some people don't put it as a -R instead they use -L.

Just thought I'd throw that out there to help.
