The best freq is the one it is transmitting on.

6 Meters is the "best" band for M/S.
Back in the day, the Air Force used a 40MHZ meteor scatter link to relay data from the Alaska/Canada RADAR system (DEW).
A good thing to do first is to listen on a unused (in your area) FM broadcast station, With a modest 3-6 element Yagi rooftop antenna you should have no trouble hearing distant broadcast stations come in during a "ping".
Perhaps once every couple hours during quiet times, and up to several pings per minute during a shower.
It will be unmistakable, you will suddenly hear a station (or several!) coming in 5x9 for a second or 3- longer if you catch a "blue wizzer"-, and fade away just as fast.
