Charlie, K5USS (he dropped the "D" in his call today - was KD5USS) and Miles, WD5VDS, are planning on making some repairs on my tower after work on Thursday of this week (the wires connecting the driven element to the beta match on my HyGain DB-1015 got knocked loose by a hail storm a few weeks back). Since it is not safe for me to climb anymore due to my rheumatoid arthritis, they have graciously offered to make the repairs. The DB-1015 is the third antenna up and will require standing on the top plate of the tower (3 element full sized 20 meter yagi then a 2 element 12 meter yagi are below the DB-1015) and it is "one heck of a lot of work" to pull the rotor, then loosen the thrust bearing and then loosen the other beams. Fortunately, since the actual work will only take a few minutes, however, one person will have to get pretty near the top of the tower. Fortunately, the mast is plenty heavy to take a safety belt.

Anyway, I want to publicly thank them in advance plus invite anyone in this area over to watch, work the ground end, etc.

If anyone wants to see where they will be working, go to http://home.attbi.com/~k9sth and click on the antenna photos near the top.

Glen, with all of the help you have provided me, not to mention you answering MANY stupid questions from me, I am glad to be able to assist. See you Thursday!

I'd offer to help manage a tag line for hauling stuff up the tower, but I imagine that would be one heck of a tower if the tag line stretched all the way to Michigan.

Just wanted to make a call sign correction Miles (me), recently changed call sign to KA5FYF, from KD5VDS. #My new call is the call I had at 15 years of age as a Novice. #I figured I earned it back then so I wanted it back.

Good Luck Glen! Hope all goes well with your antenna party. Have not attended one of these in years..!

Nice to have help close by that you can rely upon. Thanks to those guys for helping Glen get his antennas up and going again.

Glen, thanks for the 6M QSO....good signal from the SB-110. Now if we could work Steve, WB6WIK/6 on 6M..!!

He does listen...from time to time..

Charlie, contact editor@qrz.com by E-Mail to get you logon changed.

NCR: It wouldn't have been so long if I still lived in northwestern Indiana!

For the rest of the world, Bill, W0LPQ, happened to run across me a couple of days ago on 6 meter SSB. I have been "conversing" with him for quite a while on the Internet, but that was the first time we ever worked!

Unfortunately, it is pouring down rain in Richardson right now. So, we are going to have to postpone fixing my DB-1015 for a few days.

What?! And pass up such a great opportunity? I thought the best antennas required erection or adjustment during periods of extreme cold, strong winds or heavy precipitation, preferably all three! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

It has been my experience that this is only true when there is no one there to suffer with you... but then I suppose that is WHY they're not there... they have better sense... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

If the weather clears up, we are going to try for Saturday. I have already had 1.45 inches of rain today and there is supposed to be more on its way.

Now, the best wire antenna that I ever had was a 270 foot long "Zepp" (true Zepp, with the 300 ohm end feed) that I had to take apart several TV power transformers to get enough wire. There was a 160 meter contest on and I wanted to get in the action (around Christmas 1959). I soldered together enough wire, ran it from the house to a "T" pole in the middle of the yard, then on to a wild cherry tree at the end of the yard, then it cut back to a 30 foot telephone pole in the back yard. Worked great on all bands 160 through 10 meters except for 15.

By the way, I put this up about 3:00 AM, in over 3 feet of snow, during a blizzard! That antenna was up until my mother sold the house around 1990!
