View Full Version : Previous Contacts and Change of Call
I have a couple of contacts in my log that pre-date my current call (it's a vanity call).
I assume the contact info is valid, the details show the op's name that previously held the call.
Other than simply rejecting a contact - is there any way to "forward" the log to the person that previously held the call through QRZ?

And along those lines, when I uploaded my logbook, I forgot that many of those contacts were with my old call, W4DFW. Many are going to get a contact with W4PG but will find W4DFW at the same time and day.

I'm working on a solution for the callsign change problem.
The logbooks are tightly coupled to the callsign that originated the contact. In some sense, the logbook should also be coupled to the person who owns the log. There are a number of issues that need to be well thought out before we make any changes to this logic.
Consider that:
A user may have more than one callsign and wishes to maintain a log for each one
A user may have one callsign and wish to log on behalf of another, such as a club or DXPedition operation
A user may have a collection of QSO's and then suddenly have a new callsign. All of the old logs reference the old callsign. When another user looks up the old callsign, it's no longer available.
When a user changes their callsign, do all of the previous logs dump into the new callsign, or, should a new logbook be created? What if they have 3 callsigns and only one of them changes?
It's not as simple as it sounds. I would appreciate some thought and discussion about this topic before I proceed.

Logs are associated with callsigns and logbooks are associated with individuals. There is no callsign history in the callsign database nor need there be any.
A callsign log might be covered by more than one logbook. The only requirement is to establish a valid beginning and ending date in a logbook and then catalog the QSOs associated with the callsign to the proper logbook by date period. The logbook user must first provide the dates in order to create a logbook or, in transition, to again have access to its logbook. The ending date can be left vacant indicating it is still current. In the event a callsign page undergoes a significant change the logbook's assigned dates can again be questioned and adjusted. That might result in the creation of a new logbook.
Next allow the user, as desired, to “link” the logbooks of interest by specifying callsign and date period. In a sense, this is a subset of linking callsign aliases to a user.
The only thing left is to enable a user to establish a logbook for a previous call and period.
As to security, the users password might also be tied to the logbook corresponding to the callsign and date period at the time the dates are established.
