I want to hook up an aviation headset to my FT-897D

The mick connector wire config is shown here:

The 5.2mm plug is the mic plug.

I have an idea about what wire go here, but is looking for "second opinion"....

Resist the temptation to connect the electronics ground and the microphone ground together. It can make the microphone hum like crazy. Keep the microphone ground separate.

Within the past year, there was a QST article on connecting aviation headsets to ham gear.

It's not trivial -- there are impedance-matching, and level-matching, considerations. The aviation headsets contain amps which boost the mic level to "carbon granule" levels.
