View Full Version : Don't you think it's time for new APRS software?

The APRS system is quite advanced with good digipeater and igate coverage... but the software that is out there is too basic. I think it's time for a more comprehensive program with advance mapping and features so this system can show its true glory. What do you think?

Feel free to start coding, scratch that itch...

I guess to answer that I'd need to know what imporvements you have in mind?

Mapping: #APRS+ using Street Atlas, APRSPOINT using Map Point, WINAPRS and UIVIEW using Prescision Streets, newest version of WINAPRS using TIGER maps. What's out there that you see a need for that is not supported by one of these packages?

What other features are you seeing that are missing? #These packages (and several others not listed) support a wide range of features such as IGating, RF-internet e-mail, #porting NWS alerts to RF, etc. #I'd be interested to see what you have in mind.

Personally, I run my home station 24/7 with DOSAPRS due to it's reliablity vs any Windows program, and the cheap (i.e. FREE) hardware required to use it. #Meets my day to day needs. #

So, what is missing from these programs? #Perhaps you feel that there needs to be a merger of features from the various programs? Contact the authors. #In my experience they have been very open to suggestion. (Doesn't mean they'll impliment it, but they'll listen).

And as the previous poster stated, if you have the skill set (I certainly don't), then code your own program. But please, read the APRS Spec first!

Well, a version for GTK+ would be nice.

Please excuse my ignorance... Could you define "GTK+" please. (Maybe it's something I know under a different name)

Thanks and 73

What I'd be looking for is a program that visually looks pretty. High def. maps, high detail, a professional look and feel. The support for topo maps/gis maps would also be nice, I'm surprised there isn't already. A program that could be used for nativagtion in a car and have the aprs features right on hand. I can't think of anything else at the current moment. As far as coding goes, I'd love to.. No experience or time to learn it.

GTK+ is a cross platform library for creating GUIs (www.gtk.org (http://www.gtk.org/)).

It's actually pretty good, although most commonly found in X; specifically Gnome.

If you're looking for something with Linux support; this is it. #Xastir: Linux APRS software (http://www.xastir.org)

Although I have to wonder what your specification for GTK is all about... It's just a graphics toolkit, as I recall. #Nothing special about that. Take a look at XASTIR and see if that fills your desire.

From their webpage:
Xastir currently runs on Windows/MacOSX/Linux/FreeBSD/Solaris/Lindows, with many more possible. It supports 117 map formats, several types of TNC's and weather stations, Festival speech synthesizer, AX.25 networking (Soundmodem/Baycom/SCC!http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif and seven languages!. On Unix-like operating systems, you can run your weather station or GPS on a separate computer as well, which is good for those hams who are already short on serial ports. See the "Xastir Features" link for detailed info on Xastir's many features.

******Is that enough for you, feature-wise? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif Check out http://www.eskimo.com/~archer/xastir.html for the full list of features.

HTH!

It's that and considerably more. My specification for languages and UI libs is limited to "do what allows you to do that vodoo that you do so well". GTK allows for quick interface development, that's about it.

However, XASTIR is far beyond that. This is done in X and relies heavily on Imagemagick along with half a dozen really serious libs. It's well done.
