Now that Windows 7 has been out for a while. What version do you use? 32 or 64 bit ?

I skipped Vista all together, and got the full version Win 7 and use the 64 bit version. :D

same here....

needs an option for all the variants...

the laptop here runs 7 ultimate 32, the rest of the machines apart from the wifes all run 7 pro 32. The boss has 7 64bit pro.

WinXP still does all I need from a Windows OS. When it fails to do so I will probably leave Microsoft completely behind me.

I also run Windows server 2003. I would use a newer version if it would do what I wanted it to but lets just say that I run outdated applications. ;)

My gaming PC's run XP pro 64. Why? Simple, many of the games that I play were designed before even vista came out let alone 7. Use the game updater on my laptop with 7 and all hell breaks lose.

As you said variants are nice to have.

..Im pretty sure I still have my first PC from the early 90s. I have a pc graveyard.:p

XP is still my favorite too. But to tell you the truth 7 is not a bad OS. If you like XP you should like 7.

While not a big fan of vista if manipulated right it can work decent. It is actually easier to setup an SQL server on vista than 7.

I just ordered a Gateway lap with win 7 home premium 64. I don't quite understand the 64 bit bit. Will there be any problem running all of my older (XP) programs or peripherals?
This is a refurb and comes that way.

Run Doors, and running (anything) will not be a problem!

But to answer, it will run 32 bit mode programs. Usually. Not guaranteed. 32/64 bit is the word/address etc length.

I found out tat everytime you upgrade (?) to a newer version of O/S , all your older programs are obsolete, my car wouldn't even start anymore.
All the old books in my library have blank pages now.

Question.

If I upgrade to 64 bit, does that mean I can re-compile all my Fortran code in single precision now to get the same results?

Most hams have several computers such as older 32 bit XP and even Vista but Windows 7 64 bit and enough RAM is the ideal PC to run ham software. I run 2 monitors using a good graphics card and can run multiple programs such as logging with QRZ/XML lookup, Flex Radio, Ham Radio Deluxe and even online television if I like. These computers have came down in price lately for about $550. An additiona video card and bigger power supply makes for a good system.
