The question is when its coming. Android is growing like Hell and will be market leader soon.
I thing it will take some more month till some release is coming out. But ok thats how it is. The good thing is it will come out for Android. I use also the Droid here in Germany. Awsome Phone. Why i used Nokia for years ?? Time of this is over

From the Echolink website:
Users have asked about the possibility of an EchoLink app for BlackBerry, Symbian, PalmOS, Android, and Windows Mobile. Unfortunately, these platforms are all very different from each other, so developing software for each would involve five separate development efforts, in addition to iPhone. Development has begun on an edition of EchoLink for Android (with no release timetable yet), but there are no projects underway right now to develop editions for other platforms.
The important thing to remember is that this is free amateur software so the availability of a version for a particular platform depends on a developer with the necessary skills having the desire to devote vast amounts of time on something for no personal reward. Perhaps someone would write an Echolink client in Java, then it would run on anything.

I'd consider assisting in the Java rewrite (I'm on a crackberry), but it seems this is a closed-source project. Am I wrong?
BTW: Have fun getting a Java app to run on Windows Mobile. Although Wifey had trouble getting Windows Moble to run on Windows Mobile. :)

I don't know. There is a Linux native version (can't remember what it is called, it wasn't anything obvious like "Echolink for Linux") and as with most Linux projects the source code was provided so you could compile it. It's possible the versions for other platforms are based on that. I seemed to remember that when I tried it I found the Windows version running under wine worked better.

I'd like to see it on Symbian if possible; it is still the market share holder after all.

it is ... and it isn't. the symbian folks didn't move with the times and android is eating their lunch (and dessert too). sad.
(that said, my e72 rocks ... but it just won't have the applications that android has.)

Doug, this is a good question. I have been developing and testing on 2.1 and I suspect that the great majority of devices are running, or soon will be running, 2.1 or 2.2. I will have to see how much demand there is for this app to run on 1.6 devices. The bigger issues might not be so much the OS version but the screen size and the available RAM.

Just a few Q for the Echolink creator.
Will this be a simplex action with a touch button for on/off?
Can Duplex be a consideration?
And will this be more akin to a new Dstar style format for android?
The Android phone does seem a good way forward. Having Echolink on will make things better.
Thank you very much for working on this project. I can't wait!

It is a simplex action with a touch button for on/off, just like the iPhone edition of EchoLink. EchoLink is half-duplex by design because the great majority of RF links on the system (probably all) are half-duplex.
Just ordered one of those ten inch Zenithink Android pads with 2.1 installed (and 2.2 coming later this month, supposedly) Any chance Echolink will be ready by the time it clears customs?

Thanks for clarifying that for me. I have never used the Iphone Echolink app as I never had an Iphone. But it sounds a good deal when the product will be available.
But as the news says online, Google is being sued by Oracle for using Android as their system is virtually identical too Oracle so the future of Android is going to be fun.

I am using Sony Ericsson's SO-01B, which runs OS 1.6. I am not sure this device is selling outside Japan, but is very popular in JA. The screen size is 480 x 854 and RAM size is 384MB. I hope EchoLink runs on it, too.

EL App is working great. Good job and thank you!
First of all, thank you to the development team for your hard work! This is very appreciated.
Just installed on Samsung Galaxy S and run on 3G in Bangkok. I tested with a couple Thai servers with good result. Anyhow, I found that the volume control is not working (max audio all the time).
I am running Echolink on a Samsung Captivate (AT&T's flavor of the Galaxy S). I have not had a problem with volume except when I got to make a phone call right after I use EL.
Received report that my audio break up, but may be from the bad 3G network in my area.
I have also experienced the choppy audio on transmit. I don't think it's the 3G connection because this happens with bith WIFI and 3G. The solution I found to this is I have to close out any program that I do not absolutely need, including Gmail and other auto updating programs, through the memory manager. After I do that it seems to work fine. I think EL is either taking up lots of memory or needs to be a higher priority while in TX.
Another issue I noticed is there is no way to fully "Quit" EL unless you close it though task manager or memory manager. If you don't do this you stay connected to the EL server and the program is still running even if it's not the front screen. I like that I can still listen and stay connected to EL while doing other things on my phone, but I would like an option to completely close the program when done, much like the Scanner Radio app.
Is there a place to officially submit bugs/improvement requests?

I still have no idea why the volume control in my ss galaxy s is not working with echolink, but I am too excite to feel this as a problem, just use my finger to cover the speaker when feel the audio loud :)

I would get the memory manager app and use it to close programs that you're not using and may not be important. You may have several things running in the background.

Pretty sure that nothing but the core component that are in the background (restarted, pulled battery), still got the same result. Either 3G (3 in HK) and WiFi. Anyhow, thanks for your suggestions. At least I still can listen now. I will try the app killer again once finish the works here.

After return from HKG on Saturday, I was able to compare between Echolink on iPod and Android (Samsung GS A2.1) on the way drove to the east of Thailand. I use GMS/EDGE instead of 3G which the limited coverage and found that the same choppy TX still remain on Android (again, the RX was fine). Then I turned to iPod by switched the Samsung GS into mobile access point and for the iPod connection. This time everything worked perfectly. I drove on the highway and qso with the nodes for hours. I am pretty sure that it should be some issues with my Samsung GS in handling echolink. Anyway, even the problem still remain, but I am glade that the Android app has released. At least I was listen when I travel. .... thanks and much appreciate the effort that put into echolink project. /73 HS1WFK

It would be nice to be able to see what my node number is for a quick reference if i I want someone to call me on the droid from the radio side of a node...
I also had no luck, once I found my node number online, in connecting back to the driod app from my echo/irlp equipped repeater. It would just connection time out. This was the case regardless of the droid using 3G or 802.11 connections to the internet.

Keep in mind that your Droid will not be able to accept incoming connections if the Network setting is Relay. However, it should work if the Network setting is Direct or Proxy, assuming you have been able to connect to *ECHOTEST* in either of these modes. To the best of my knowledge, when using the 3G network, Direct will work only if you are using Verizon in the U.S.

I have been able to successfully test my connection in direct mode on Verizon 3G with the echotest server but still am unable to connect to the application from my node. In direct mode I get a connection announecment and then "the connection attempt has timed out". I get the same in public proxy also. In each case I can connect to my node repeater from the device as well as the test server. This is on a DroidX with android 2.1 on verizon. I have also tried both 3G and WiFi with the same results.

I have the app, along with the recent upgrade, running on my Moto Droid, running Bugless Beast V.4 (2.2) and it runs great. Thank you for getting this done!
My issues I've seen so far are choppy RX audio when using Relay. Using Proxy clears up the chop and the audio is fine. I've not used any direct router connections yet. All the routers here are tied up with other Echolink machines, and I'm mostly using my phone in other locations.
The other issue is the camera button (used as PTT) freezes the screen if you push it during RX. The fix is to push the back button. I really think that the PTT function is cool. If you turn the phone upside down, the camera button is in the perfect place to make your Moto Droid feel like a Handi Talkie.
Keep up the good work! (I'm making a donation)

The latest update is a HUGE improvement on my Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S). It took the app from a proof of concept that kinda worked to a fully usable and useful application!
The TX audio no longer cuts out. Also, I can run the application with out shutting off every application on my phone. Thank you.
I do have a question, how does the app handle receiving a phone call when QSO, RX and TX?

It probably means that your Hero is running Android 1.5. EchoLink requires Android 1.6 or above. Check with your carrier to see if an upgrade to 1.6 is available.
