View Full Version : Is the FT-857D receiver as good as the IC-718
years ago, I had a TS-50 that seemed to overload the receive on a base antnenna.
It was like they designed a REAL hot receive, assuming most would run low gain moblie antennas.
I'm thinking about getting a YAESU FT-857D for the car, but how would it preform on a G5RV or 4BTV trap antenna compared to the IC-718 ?
How would the selectivity compare?

go to Yaesu site check manual
see IPO in manual
you can turn off the pre amp
see ATT in manual
you can switch in a front end attenuator
with the pre amp turned off and the attenuator
in line
the receive section will not be over loaded
by 4btv or g5rv
oh
you have been a op long enought
to know
we have no base antennas
taxi cab companys have base antennas
g5rv is a fixed antenna

please consult pages 6, 8, and 10 of the newest AES catalog.
it states:"Base station antennas"
Besides, maybe I am a taxi driver

There is little, if any difference.
Also remember that both are mobile rigs. The FT-857D is just better suited to todays new vehicles. Very few have the room for a big ol' box.
My choice would be the FT-857D

matters not what AES says in its catalog
they are wrong
we do not have base stations
a base station only communicates with its own mobile stations
all operating under one license
we have fixed stations
mobile stations
and portable stations

I don't think that the Icom 718 is known as a mobile tranceiver, but it could quite easily be used in a vehicle. I own an Icom 718, in my opinion and many others have said the same, its the best value for money rig and is excellent for use with digital modes. The only time I ever listened to an 857 was in a retail ham shop where they had one in operation. I wasn't impressed.

Ive owned both. There is nothing wrong with an Icom IC-718, but I disagree with you that it is better then the FT-857D.
The Icom IC-718 is marketed as a mobile rig. Mostly because it runs on 13.8V DC and not the AC Mains. People do run them mobile though. I saw a Ham in a truckstop once who had a Kenwood TS-850 mounted on top of the dash on a Frieghtliner.

No he's the self appointed king of QRZ, didn't you know? He regularly personally insults folks, then runs to the moderators for cover, they seem to tolerate it.

Is it any wonder why people don't post questions on ham forums?
Typical snobby replies instead of offering useful information is my guess.

Yep, that's pretty much why I look other places for info. Got tired of being slammed on this forum for simply asking a question. I still lurk here however.

I have an 857 and continue to be impressed by it. I installed a 500 and 300hz cw filter in it and along with the IF shift it is a very nice CW rig. I use it at my remote cabin and have often thought it would be a great main rig at my house. Hope you enjoy yours.
It's wonderful
Played with it in the shack til I learned the menus
Installed it mobile
Makes me want 6 meters and 144 SSB in the house.
