Hi:
Downloaded HRD v5 and it is working FB with my
ICom CT-17 and PROII. Wow, this is a nice piece
of software but really complicated. Slowly and surely
I'll get it. It wont replace my contest software,
(Writelog) but should be great for general work.

Anyway, I have a silly question that's bugging
the heck out of me. I am trying to configure HRD, the logging
section, and DM-780. I have been prompted
for my Lattitude & longitude 3 times now in
3 different places. I just copied it
from QRZ listing.

But now when I bring up the world map, it
shows a "star" just off the coast of West Africa, when I live in Los Angeles.
Is this icon suposed to be my QTH?
If so, how do I change it? I can't remember which prompts
had me enter my lat & long, but I must have misplaced a minus or
plus or reversed lat & long....BUT......it hows
that stupid home icon in the same place in every map.
(Told you it was a silly question).

I am also having problem inporting my logs in as ADIF files.
Any tips? I think I *may* have inadvertantly started more than one
log.

Is there a good "HRD for Dummies" stickie somewhere?
I am concentrating on learning the Rig Control,
Or recommended website?
never used computer rig control
first. DM780 seems to work **perfectly** with
my rigblaster.

Thanks es 73, Ken AD6KA

Ken,

Several things you can try. In the Logbook Configure > My Station, put in your Grid Square in the Locator field. Then press the downward pointing arrow next to that field. It'll get you in the ballpark and you can see the info you'll need there {34.259802 & -118.601297}. My guess is you're missing the minus sign.

Now, for the HRD Mapper program, you'll put in the info off your QRZ page that's in the Degrees, Minutes and Seconds format with the North and West.

If you have multiple logs open, you'll see the various logs on the top of the log frame. You can close them by clicking the 'X' by the names.

What are you importing you log from? If you have it in an ADIF file format, it's simply: Logbook> Import> ADIF and then point it to the file by clicking on the 3 dots at the end of the line at the very top of the dialog box. It makes it easier if you select the "View ADIF file" first to assure you got the right stuff, close that dialog box and then "Save To Database".

I hope this has been helpful to get you started. HRD is a great program full of lots of helpful tools to automate your station. I even built a remote antenna selector that changes bands when I do. Simple circuit using reed relays and 2n2222 transistors controlling vacuum relays on the tower.

If you need more help, post here or look on the HRD site for the HRD version 5 Forums for more help. You can also E-Mail me direct at my call at arrl.net

Thanks for replying Jim:
I got the ADIF file I wanted imported.
It was from an old flie program, LOG-EQF. I have swicthed
to Wrtilog a few years ago, but had about 10,000 QSO's in Log EQF format.
It does have a file converter. But they listed
3 or 4 different types of ADIF files. (Tabulated, commas, and
something else). Finally go t the right one.

And you're right about the silly QTH icon, I did copy
it from QRZ but must have marked something wrong plus or minus,
Working FB now.

I LOVE this program, but very involved.
Spend a lot of time getting the DX Clusters to import.
But I think I got it because clicking on them takes me there. :)

Now what I want to do it this, but don't know
if I can do it in HRD.
In 2000 I operated as 5R8GQ and wracked up
several thousand QSO's. I want to
start a NEW SEPERATE LOGBOOK, but
for my 5R8GQ callsign. (10 years later I am
still wrking on QSL's and awards I earned that I am trying
to confirm.

I am not sure how to do this, to add a new logbook.
It's seems its a lot simpler when you start the program for the
first time, because it prompts you for all this info.

One last thing. I have a lot of seperate cotest log files
that I was too lazy to merge with my main logbook. (Always tires
at the end of the contest, said I'd do it later, later never came).
Aside from looking up the dates of the contest QSO's and looking
for "QSO wholes" in the main log where the contest should be.
Can I just merge them all anyway, and if by chance I merge
a contest already in there, would it be hard to delete
the double entries without wiping them all out?
I guess I'm asking if there is a "Delete Dupes" feature?".

Jim, thanks agn for anwering my questions.
I will write you offline.

I am using just an ICOM CT-17, serial cable, and
9 pin to 25 pin DB25 adapter for the 9 pin serial
cable. Worked great the first time. I dont
have anymore serial ports for my rigblaster.
I will try a good quality USB-Serial cable (ie Belkin) and see how
that works as a COM Port for Digimodes.

Figured out how to make a second logbook.
so all my 5R8 QSO's are imported to their own file.

Question: I must have meased up in the past with
an "Accidental Merge" because I have about 80 non-5R8
QSO's mixed in with that log. (Easy to spot because of the dates).

I see that they're easy to DELETE, but
how do I MOVE them to my "home qth logbook?

Thanks es 73, Ken AD6KA/5R8GQ
This program is insane as to what it does, but the
GUI drives me bananas.

Ken,

This is an easy one. One I don't even have to try it at home first. Here's how:

Mark all those QSOs in the log they're in now. If they're in a group, tag (click on it with the mouse) the first one and then press and hold CTRL and SHIFT, scroll to the last one and tag it. Now the whole group should be selected (highlighted). If not in a group, CTRL and ALT to select them one by one.

Once you have them selected (highlighted), do a Logbook > Export > ADIF and make sure you choose the 'Selected' button in the dialog. Create the log by naming a file and save it. This only exports those that are highlighted. You can also use this method to come back and remove them once they're in the other log.

Switch to the tab for the log you want to import into, and go through the Import routine to that file.

Now for the contest logs, there's several ways to do it. Create additional logs by contest, by year, whatever way you choose. You can use the info above to move the data around as you wish. When you do the import, there's a button you can select to not import dupes. So, that should answer that problem. The GUI can be rather daunting. Best thing to do is to look at all the option on a screen before you proceed. There's also a way to add a second 'Profile" with the other call you have. If you want specifics on this, let me know. It will help when you want to go and print out labels (Google: HRD Labels for a utility for that).

That should do it!

Again, feel free to ask for help. I love this stuff and I believe helping people use it and understand it will only make it that much better.

I have the Belkin USB to serial adapter and it works great. I even have one in my work tool bag (I'm a network engineer) to get into different network devices for console access. Never had a problem with a second and third one in the shack. No RFI issues either. My 756 is connected via an add-on serial card in the PC. I also use a SignaLink USB for digi modes (best $100 accessory there is).

There's also a utility program for HRD that is completely worth having. Google HRD Utilities and you get a link to the site. Takes care of LoTW uploads/downloads and eQSL if you use either of those.

Thanks Jim:
You make it sound easy.
Great to clean those QSO's that don't belong in the 5R8 Log.
And I will email you about seting up a seperate "Profile" for the 5R8 log.
That seems prudent anda good way to go, thanks for mentioning it!!

The reason those non-5r8 Q's got in there was because I was doing 5R8 cards with the rig on in the backround and I when I heard a DX station, I just entered the info there instead of opening another log file. (Read: LAZY)

"there's a button you can select to not import dupes."

SUPER! I have a dozen or more contest logs (all out fo order of course) on my laptop. Running HRD on the desktop for now. (I use an ANCIENT laptop for contesting because I can't use the desktop and run a kilowatt, too much RFI). Anyway that laptop is dying, needs replaced BADLY, and I gotta rescue those logs before it does completley tits up.

So I'll grab a ton of contest files, merge them, covert
to ADIF, and check that that "Do not import dupes" box.

Very elegant solution.

I have learned a lot about HRD from you and by just opening and playing with things.

Check this out: In my entire 5R8 log (and a lot of my Home QTH Log)
there is NO STATE listed for that QSO. Never bothered with state. WAS from CA is uninteresting to me, but WAS Mixed and WAS RTTY from 5R8 would be COOL. I noticed that I can double click on a QSO to modify it, then hit the "QRZ" button, and it will import entire name, grid square, address, etc, AND STATE.

Question: IS there a way to do this (qrz info import) with an entire file (log) or do I have to open up every QSO one by one? (Hey, I've done tasks as boring or more with some logging programs, hahaha)

THanks for the info on the Belkin USB to Serial adapter for my Rigblaster
for digimodes. I use the RigBlaster for PSK, Olivias,SSTV and such. Causual use. But for RTTY contesting I use a HAL DXP-38 and WriteLog,True FSK with the PRO Series allows use of the PRO's sweeeet RTTY filters.

PS: Good chance I may be travelling to Tanzania , 5H, later in the year for a month or so of operating. I know, not a really rare prefix, but I love Africa... AND I have a free place to stay! I will TRY to get ot 7Q7, Malawi, that would be nice a nice country to put on the air.

Ken,

Grab the HRD Utilities I spoke about. It will update your entire log. The second tab in HRDU is to perform a QRZ Update. Select the fields you wish to update. Put in your Zed log in info and hit the update button. Make sure you select some number greater than the 10 most recent contacts it has by default.
