I have a Icom-730. I dont have the mic to go to the radio. It came with an Icom hm-7 that has a 8 pin connector. Anyone know a cheap, modern mic for use with this radio?

Do you have the Icom IC-730 owner's manual??
NO reason you should not have it -- when Icom provides it FREE !
http://www.icom.co.jp/world/support/download/manual/pdf/IC-730.pdf
Icom regularly showed the original microphone model and optional microphones
that matched the radio (at that time) in their manuals.
Icom classifies the HM-7 as a Dynamic Microphone with an internal pre-amplifier.
Voltage is provided by the IC-730, either via phantom voltage, or bias on the audio lead,
to power the pre-amp inside the HM-7. The pre-amp in turn isolates and protects the dynamic element from damage.
Bob Heil has an article, that you should read, about Icom microphone --
specific to your radio, referred to as the "ZERO" models.

Early ICOM - that's every ICOM before the great PRO series - had very low level microphone preamplifiers. Traditionally they are 20 dB down in gain from the standards set by Collins, Kenwood, Yaesu, etc. years ago. ICOM came to America in the early 70's with their "zero" models (720, 730 and 740) all which had NO mic preamps built into the radio (they were in the microphone). The microphone preamplifiers were in the microphone! How stupid. This did not allow you to use any other microphone but THAT mating microphone since half of the audio circuits were in the mic.
A very cost effective method to bringing those ole 'zero' transceivers to life is to use a small Behringer UB 502 mixer or W2IHY two band EQ plugged into the mic input. NOW you can use a Heil GM-5, HM-10, PR 20 or any of our dynamic microphones and have 2 band EQ besides.

The old CB power microphones could be used -- BUT require a bit of rework to protect the microphone elements!!

Rewire the HM-7 because that is the mic that came with that radio.
If you wish to use a desk mic look for a used Icom SM-5. That mic will work with the IC-730.
