Eugene F. Hammes K6ZK 1921 to 2003 #
Eugene F. Hammes, 81, passed away May 12, 2003 in Grass valley, Ca. He served in WWII on Liberty ships as a Radio Communications Officer in the Maritime Service, after graduating from Gallups Island Radio School near Boston. #His first trip was on the S.S. John Burke, then on the Renald Fernald as Chief Radio Officer and was assigned a Navy operator as his assistant. #Some of their stops included Halifax, Nova Scotia, Edinburgh, Scotland, London, England, back to Philadelphia, PA, then to Iran, to the Persian Gulf at Khoramshahr, Alexandria, Egypt, Malta, Taranto, Italy, and back to New York. #He then joined the U.S. Navy at San Diego CA. until the end of 1946. #Joined HAM radio in 1948.
