I'd also like to add that it will probably outlive everyone that reads this and most of the rigs we're using.
I did this when I got licensed in the 80's, with a plank of 1/2" cabinet-grade Birch ply, abt 4 x 16". Key is set 'twisted' at one end to allow a bit more natural drape to the arm. The key DOES feel different than mounted straight on the board.
I seem to recall getting the idea from an old picture of a shipboard shack. It works.
