Took my exam tonight and passed Technician, so I went for General also and passed that one as well. I am going to take the Extra in October. I look forward to seeing my call in the database soon!

I took the exam in Pensacola Florida, hosted by the Milton Amateur Radio Club (MARC). The VE's were all very professional, explained everything well, and presented a very positive attitude, exactly what I expected.

I look forward to returning in October for the Extra.

Another new ham here too. I passed my tech test yesterday. I have also been into radios since I was about 10 years old, playing with my grand dad's CB. 25 years later I finally got around to getting licensed. This forum is a great resource and I'm looking forward to being on the air. Now all I need is some equipment.

Good job to both of you. It really is a great feeling. I got my license when I was 12 (26 now). It really is a great hobby.

Try some of EVERYTHING ham radio has to offer.

FM repeaters
FM/SSB simplex
HF (all modes)
any band CW
APRS
ECHOLINK
Packet
EME
PSK and other Digi modes
And the list goes on FOREVER:D

Give them all a whirl. Everything is fair game.

Congrats you 2. I did the same as you chris (chris here too btw).. Took E1 and E2 same time, passed both. I should have pressed my luck at tried the Extra test too. But I know I would have failed that one. :D

Best congrats to each of you. My advice, don't get stuck on 2 meter repeaters. I quickly became tired of them, and got on the HF bands as quickly as I could. I never looked back !

Someone else mentioned that this is where the real learning begins. I have to agree. I've been a ham since 15 years of age -- my hobby led to a career in telecommunications in the government electronics and commercial telecom sectors. The pursuit of amateur radio over the years has continually taught me new things -- year in and year out.

The hobby is full of exciting avenues. Find one or a couple you enjoy, and chase after them. There will be exciting times ahead.

For me, I like to operate on-the-air -- DX'ing, contesting, ragchewing, CW, and some amount of VHF/UHF work. I love Six Meters -- that band is a blast when it magically opens!

Congrats again! Live the dream!

Well today was the day! My call is in the FCC database: KJ4OOB

I also received my Yaesu VX-8R last night, so today has been like Christmas. I got it programmed and made my first call on the local repeater and got a 5/9 call report. I feel like a little kid again!

This is so much fun!

You think The repeater was fun? Get on hf and look out. You won't want to turn the radio off. As for me I am a rage chew type of guy.I talk to people from coast to coast everyday. Hope to hear you on the air .

Congrats! I know the feeling well. I passed my Tech on Monday (19th) and just showed up in the db this afternoon (wasn't there this morning). I picked up a Yaesu VX-7R last week and have been listening and getting used to the radio controls. I'll be giving to folks around here on 2m a shout on my way home tonight. :D

I just received my call my call sign a couple of days ago so this looks like a good thread to start with. No radio yet and not sure what to buy even. I plan to get involved with the Red cross and the storm watch groups here in Fl. I'm watching E bay for an older dual band hand held.

Congratulations to all!! Just a small tidbit, while you may have or not have a starter rig. Jump right in on Echolink, it will allow you to use a pc and connect to repeaters worldwide, Great time to be had even if you just listen. While it is not a replacement for a rig, it is a great addition to any shack.

I got my license in Aug 2001 (tech) and the next month was in the D.C. area stopping at a Ham radio store. Best buy in my humble oppinion was the Yeasu VX-5R (tri bander). Great starter radios. I now have two (2) of these radios. While I spend most of my time on VHF/UHF, I upgraded to Extra (2007) and I have also obtained two (2) HF (base and mobile) rigs and am curently working on getting the antennas completed and installed.

Unless you are one that tunes up on top of ongoing QSO's. Then it's the other way around.

Yaesu VX-5R are really good. These can be found for $150. They are 3 band and put out 5 watts.

I have a VX-7R. I like it. I only caution you with going the route of a HT because I live in the middle of no where and there are currently 1 active HAMS (me). At least on the bands you can access with it and as a tech. I am in the process of upgrading to a general and probably eventually extra. If I have a mobile or base station unit and good antenna there are repeaters I could use no opposed to just when I am traveling. So if you live in a populated are it would be good, but if not spend the money for something different that would have more than 5W of power.
