I went into a Rat Shack a few days ago to buy some stuff for an antenna project. It was my first time in a Rat Shack in about 15 years. It was kind of sad then, what the store is now is really sad.

That's funny.

I was in a Radio Shack Store yesterday to pick up patch cord parts.

I said to the manager as I was checking out "Your company really should change its name as it has nothing to do with radio any longer."

Can't tell you the last time I walked into a Radio Shack and actually spoke with someone who had an inkling of radio or anything dealing with a homebrew project. Usually I walked right back to the drawers where connectors (et al.) were located. When an "associate" came up and asked if they could help, I asked about a PL-259 (or something else), and received nothing but a deer in the headlights look. The last time I saw a ham radio for sale was in Kalispell, MT in December 2000.

I frequent the Rat Shack quite often, as I am an active builder of projects, and need lots of LEDs, Diodes, power jacks, perfboards, connectors, switches, etc. etc etc. SO I charge it up on my RAT SHACK credit card and pay it off someday. As long as they have parts that the JUNK STORE doesn't have, I will be a good customer.

That's not true. Cell phones are "radios". But if they are going to change their name, perhaps they need to us a more APPROPIATE name like "The Forth Worth Golden Parachute Club."

The last thing I purchased even remotely related to radios was a AA plastic pack to hook up my LDG Z100 tuner so I can take it out for Field Day,etc. That's it.
The place is a bore now. The people they hire are (most of the time) bumbling uneducated kids. No offense to them as people but they are NOT trained in electronics or radio. So much for the Radio part of the name anymore.

I worked at a Radio Shack in the mid 80's when they still stocked every resistor, semi conductor and diode in little trays, etc. I actually enjoyed it.Wasn't there for long, maybe 6 months. But it was a good job for me at that age.And i was a licensed ham as well. So I knew SOMETHING.

My local "Shack" is overstocked with young petite 18 yr old girls that know a little about cell phones and whom try to sell them with their miniskirts and excessive makeup. Yuk.
No thanks.

Hehe. That is sooo true. I had to pick up a phone cord coupler the other day and the teen surfer/grunge kids were there to "visit" her and it was more like a jr high reunion. I certainly would not let her dress like that at work.

We are too relaxed in the manner of dress in professional settings in America.

I don't even think they qualify as a SHACK!

Well, I wonder if the trademark will become available....for perhaps a REAL electronics company???

Don't dress the part, eh? They don't act the part either. They are not professionals, they are simply confused. One should "dress for the job" so grunge fits in this case.

When I moved to Des Moines, I was excited to find a World Radio chain. Sadly, it had less to do with radio than Radio Shack. I think it was acquired by the group that owns Ultimate Electronics, though I can find no trace of it today.

Addendum: I found information that the World Radio chain was actually a spinoff of the ham radio manufacturer by the same name. The chain was started by the son of WRL's founder, and according to the article, went Chapter 11 in 1988.

OK, OK. Bear with me on this one. (no laughing please). I am not a ham "genius"...no-where near one. Here goes... My wife was in a local RS store the other day and was mentioning how the digital conversion box they sold her was not working properly...she thinks... The gal at RS asked her if she had a "digital antenna". She (my blonde wife) said "is there a difference"? The gal told her that without a digital antenna the box would not work correctly...

What's up with that? Am I missing something here? I was not aware there was a difference. Is there? (remember, NO laughing) or I will put the "pinned coax curse on you)!

My grandpa uses the same antenna now that he has for twenty years, no problems.

Ya know,.... I thought that was the case. Whew. I can leave the dunce cap on my wife for a little while longer. (I hate wearing that thing). As far as the sales girl goes... never mind.

Bob O.No, you're not missing something.

Remember, back in the day, these were the same type of sales people who would tell you that the reason that there's no coax version of 100 MHz Ethernet is that coax isn't capable of running 100 MHz signals.

50 Ohm Coax. RG-8 and RG-58 to be precise.

...I once had one of these guys tell me that I could NOT use RG8X on the 10 Base 2 Ethernet I had wired up at my old QTH, I HAD to use RG58AU (and only 58AU, not 58 or 58A). Also told me that I could NOT solder the BNC connectors, I HAD to use crimp on, or it wouldn't work properly. No problem. I left that RS and went to another in the next town over and got everything I needed with no hassles...

as a ratshack vet i recall it went like this: youve got questions, weve got blank stares

AC4BB

I Called the former radio shack here in town and asked what the "Velocity factor" was for the RG-6U 75 ohm coaxial cable was and "Her answer was "Sir, don't try to pull my leg with a "Prank Call." There's no such thing as a "velocity factors on Coaxial cable. You cannot pull that on me. "Click, Dial tone.
So,I went to visit a ham that owned the Franchise radio shack near by and he said "Let's see" 0.88. where did you find that info.? Right here in the radio Shack catalog.
