View Full Version : Got my old call back today!

Hiya folks,
When I upgraded from Novice to General in Dec 1975, my call was changed from WN2ZDY to WA2ZDY. I foolishly gave that call up in the spring of 1980 and have seriously regretted it since.
When I got my retirement home in Texas in 1992, I decided a 5 call would be attractive and as such I got one. Later I got W5ATX. Nice call, I like it, and planned on keeping it as I was going to retire in Texas.
Fast forward to 2003 - my ex has my home in Texas and my new lovely wife has no interest in Texas (her loss). I've also started my life over again, more little kids, etc, and the reality check told me, I'm never going back to Texas.
Soooooo . . . I decided it was time to get things realigned with being in two land, and today FCC granted me my old call back. I am now WA2ZDY.
Just in case there's confusion or whatever.
73,
Chris
Good damn thing, Chris -- With that W5 call, I imagined you sitting there with a Ten Gallon hat and a couple six-shooters at your side. A Joysey guy SHOULD have a WA2 call!
Congrats....

Well, I'm not much of a hat wearer, though I can be coerced into wearing my Flyers cap at a game. I do have a few six shooters around though, so yee ha!
Thanks, it's nice to have it back after 23 years of regret.
73,
Chris
And when my call gets updated here on qrz, I guess I'll just start a new user name, or should I pay attention to the posts asking how to change the name? Hmmmmmmmmmmm . . .
I dunknow -- I kind picture Chris with that 10 gal hat sorta pulled down over his eyes and them six shooters hangin' on the wall over his rig...
My bet is, his heart's still in Texas...
You can take the boy outta Texas; Ya can't take Texas outta the boy...

Hookem horns and all that.
Congrats on getting back your old call, Chris.
Put a gun rack in the back window of your pickup and drive around with them loaded, and a good set of steer horns at the front of your engine hood, and a can ofand pretend you're in Texas.
Did you write once that your brother is Jim, K2TL?

Geesh, I meant to say, "...and a can of open beer in your left hand..."
Had to complete the whole picture, there.

I wonder if it would cause confussion if I were to get my original call back (WN6BCN)?? #Hi!!!
When you get your HF rig back, if you have a sliding door to the outside, and you aren't on the ground floor, I have read of people that have loaded the frame using an artificial ground and an antenna tuner to opoorate 15 meters and up to 10 meters with very good results. #It is too bad you don't have something like my lot, #660' x 165'. #I can plant antenna seeds from 160 meters and up with no problem.
Of corse, you need to make sure no one uses the door while you are transmitting.
Congrats on reacquring your old call. Do you have any idea who had #since you last had it? #May prove to be interesting bit of #history.

yep, that's him.
You and he and a bunch of other guys used to chew the rag on the morning drive when you lived out here. #I used to get in on it once in a while too. #
You and I also had another connection. #My ex lived with a guy once who worked in a place in north Jersey where you worked. #The ex knew your name when I mentioned you. #That was of course years ago.
Ah well, time flies.
And Doug, nobody had this call while I didn't. I only got it in 1975, so I'm quite certain I wasn't the first. This call would probably have been issued in the early 60s to someone, though I've never researched it.
As for HF, right now I haven't a rig nor really the desire. It comes and goes, and one day a rig will present itself while the fire is burning. THEN I'll do it!

Chris

I remember Jim well, though haven't spoken with him in years. He and Joe, K2UX (used to be WB2UXJ) and I used to hang around a bit, back in the late 1960's, and went to some concerts and stuff together as I recall. Joe and I both worked at Federated Electronics, in Springfield, selling ham gear -- geesh, I was in high school back then!
Say "hi" to Jim for me, and let me know if and where I can catch him on the air!
As for the guy who used to work with me: Who's that?

Other than being a bit of a "bear" to send on CW, congratulations on getting your original call reinstated. When the FCC did away with additional station licenses and made you get a call from the area in which you were located (mid 1970s) I hated to give up the K9STH. When I got it back a number of years ago I was definitely happy even though I occasionally do get the "9 in the 5th call area" questions from time to time. Most stations are taken aback when they ask me how long I've been in Texas and I say almost 36 years!

Hi again Steve,
yes, you've got the right guys. I haven't seen Joe in 15 years. I don't think Jim has either. And Alphabet has gone underground too. I guess you probably knew Obie - he has never been heard from again either. I guess Jim last heard from him in the very early 70s. I never knew him personally; only by reputation. Jim is usually on 17m in the car, sometimes on 6 FM, and runs MixW and PSK 31 at home. Look him up on here to find him if you wish. I'm sure he'd be glad to hear from you.
As for the guy who worked with/for you, I no longer remember his name. But my ex knew your name when I mentioned you as someone I knew who worked up there at that place.
Anyway, thanks to all for the congrats on the call. Yes, it's a tad long on CW, but who cares? It's MY call!!!!! Glen I know understands. He went through it. The only thing is, mine is in the "correct" district. I went through what you deal with while I had my 5 calls and was here in NJ. Oh well.
Thanks again and 73!

Chris, I wish all my ex's lived in Texas ! #I'm sure my wife would like that too. #But, on the other hand, they say the third time is the charm, so I'll keep the 3 call. #Reality check, keep the stub.

I'm BACK!

I sent a E-Mail last nite requesting the change and got a reply today to let me know they changed it for me. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Hey Chris, welcome back to "2" land. I just upgraded to Extra, and now I will apply for my old call (WB2BEW). With my new priviledges I am enjoying HF for the first time.
Steve, I used to go to Federated to drool over the equipment that I could not afford. I recall that just about every salesperson there was a ham. It might interest you to know that Disco Electronics is still down the road. I wonder if Joe with the thick glasses is still there? NJRT, the old tube rebrander is long gone however.
