The Yaesu FT-7800R has been around for a while and its still a great radio and still available for about $239 (AES Price)

I wrote an extensive review of the FT-7800R a while ago. You can find it at the link below. Plus, I will show you how you can connect the remote head to the base without the $39 remote kit. You can accomplish same using about $5 in parts from Wal-mart. Pictures included.

Do you know if the same extension cable trick (6 wire phone cord and 6 wire coupler) will work with the FT-8900?

Thanks

No I don't. I would warn you that there is power on some of these wires. For example, on the FT-7800R if you don't include the short "twist" cable you are going to smell someting bad. The "twist" cable effecitvely reassigns pins of the straight-through RJ11 phone conference cable.

I would be careful with the FT-8900 unless you know the pin assignments and if there is any wire cross over in the cable. Just because a RJ11 or RJ45 fits I would not "hook it up and see what happens".

The more I think about this I'm having trouble seeing any reason this would not work.

If the short cable which comes with the radio has the appropriate pin-out (which of course it does), the as long as the other cable you use and the adapter are both straight through then there's no reason it would not work.

By ensuring thate each of the cable ends has the same pinout you'll be delivering each signal to the appropriate pin. I may have to pick up the cable and adapter and try it out. I'm comfortable enough with my understanding of this that I am certain it will be fine.

Thanks
Eric
