World Radiosport Team Championship 2002 Video – U.S. Premier
Seattle, Washington - USA
A standing-room-only crowd packed a local banquet room on Wednesday evening, Feb. 5th, for the U.S. Premier of the WRTC2002 video. Released world-wide on 18 January in Finland, home of WRTC2002, this was the first public showing to a group in the United States. The 60-minute video held the crowd’s rapt attention and received loud acclaim at its conclusion.
The introduction of the video was made by WRTC2002 co-chairman Martti Laine, OH2BH. #Martti was accompanied by Pertti Simovaara OH2PM – both were returning from a successful DX-pedition to Johnston Island as AH3D where nearly 30,000 QSOs were made over one week of operation. #Also present at the premier were several WRTC competitors; VE7SV (’96, ’00, ’02), VE7AHA (’02), W7WA (’00 and ‘02), N6TR (’96), K7SS (’96), and W7EJ (’90).
Hosted by the Western Washington DX Club, the gala premier recalled other visits in past years by DX luminaries, such as Father Moran, 9N1MM. Seattle is the home of WRTC, putting on the very first event in the summer of 1990. #Dan Eskenazi, K7SS, leader of the 1990 Organizing Committee recalled that, “Twelve years ago, all we had was a dream.” #Four superb competitions later, that dream has grown into one of the top international events in Amateur Radio, attracting hundreds of the world’s top contest operators as competitors, judges, referees, and spectators.
With photography by James Brooks, 9V1YC, and Dave Bell, W6AQ, the video covers WRTC2002 from the perspective and savvy of a professional sporting event. Beginning with the arrival of competitors from more than 30 countries around the world, the viewer is taken behind the scenes for the various pre-competition activities. #Of particular interest is the demonstration of the striking new “scoreboard” system that utilized the mobile phone system to report team scores publicly via the Web during the actual contest. #
The action moves right into the competition as the three camera crews visit many of the team locations distributed across sunny southern Finland. #With the top three finishing teams separated by less than one percent in total score, the tension is palpable as they change positions in the waning hours. #Join in with friends and fellow competitors as the suspense is finally broken – a marvelous documentary of this exciting radio sport!
The video is available in both VHS and DVD formats, with extra material and programming available on the DVD. #It is available for orders at http://home1.pacific.net.sg/~jamesb/. #A special thanks is due production sponsors Barry and Judith Merrill, W5GN and KA5PQD, Al Baker, W5IZ, Don Doughty, W6EEN, Northern California DX Foundation and Contest Club Finland. #For more information on WRTC2002 please view the competition Web site at http://www.wrtc2002.org.
