What, no coverage for cellular or nextel in rural Texas? Hams are the best at getting reliable communications out of the remotest of areas. Usually we call it chasing DX. we regularly send guys out to the smallest islands in the far corners of the world on DXpeditions just for the fun of it! What a great hobby. I'm glad to be a part of it. Kudos to the volunteers in Texas.

Having worked with some of the recovery efforts in Texas, it really feels good to see that this hobby is getting good positive press. It is events like this that show Ham Radio at its finest. Let's not forget, however, that Ham Radio Ops were not the only volunteers out there. People from all walks of life and varying interests came out to help too. Kudos need to go out to those people as well. I am proud be an American where volunteerism is still alive and well... I am also proud to be a part of this great hobby!

Yes, many different organizations are helping with the search effort. I just found out that 5 or more of my fellow Pierce County (Washington) Explorer Search and Rescue (PC ESAR) members will be flying down to Texas for 4 weeks of searching. Also, one of our family friends (former chairman of PC ESAR) is down there currently in charge of a FEMA team.
I would also go to Texas, but for our unit, you have to be at least 20 years of age, and I am only 15.
