I am thinking about purchasing a TH-F6A and have read a lot of the reviews. Seems like mostly positives, but I wondered if anyone in this group had some thoughts on it. I am a relatively new HAM and this would be my first radio. I haven't got the ability to use a mobile or base transceiver. I would like to have a few more whistles and bells than a basic model. I like the wideband receive. I'm almost ready I just haven't convinced myself completely. I would like to hear from anyone who has any thoughts on this or comparable HT's.

Thanks in advance

Jim,

It's generally a poor idea to get an HT for your first radio, but if you have no place to put a base or a mobile I think you'll be more than pleased with the TH-F6A. It's been around for awhile now and has thousands of satisfied users, myself included.

Audio reports are always good. You'll be happier with a better antenna than comes as standard. The Diamond tri-bander is an excellent choice.

I'm a pleased TH-F6A owner. The radio does everything that Kenwood says it does, and does it well.

About the only gripe I would have with the radio is that there's no quick-charger, nor will the suppliled charger power the radio while it's charging the battery. The second point goes away with the cigarette lighter adapter for the radio, whether plugged into your vehicle or hooked to a 12V DC supply. The first point is irksome. Will ham stuff ever have the charging convenience of cell phones, computers, PSP's, etc., etc., etc.

There are a some caveats, tho', but none of them detracts from the radio.

1) It covers the police band(s). I don't know how much of an issue this really is, but it's true that such a receiver is not particularly legal in a car in some areas. I don't worry much about that, maybe I should.

2) The HF coverage is an awesome convenience when you want to listen. But you will need more antenna than comes with the radio. I've got one of those Miracle Whips, mostly for listening, and that does a decent job. (I even worked Japan from CA with that & my FT-817!)

3) As usual with modern radios, the menu system can be a pain to learn. This is probably an attribute of just about any HT out there these days, so it is in no way a gripe about the radio. Just something to know when you get your new radio & the menu has you stumped!

Enjoy!

I forgot to mention one of the primary reasons I picked the 'F6A. The bands it cover are 2, 220, and 440. It's possible that the 220 coverage is less than useful, considering the low activity on that band but then, there's not that much activity on 2m or 440 here, either.

Just thought of another thing I wish was different on the 'F6A. This is no reason not to like the radio, it might be common for most handhelds. What I wish is that you could charge the battery outside of the radio. That way, if I got a spare battery I could charge one while operating on the other. This is in the category of "information". The goodness of the radio in all other aspects besides the battery charging situation makes up for this particular inconvenience.

Thanks Paul, Bill and Louis.....

Heading up to Columbus (Universal Radio) at the end of the month and think I have overcome any reasons for hesitation. I have heard and read mostly good things about the radio and feel comfortable that it is a good choice. Now I just have to make it to May 23rd. I am really chomping at the bit to get on the air.I've waited almost 30 years, a few more weeks won't hurt. I appreciate all your comments.

Jim,
I just wanted to add my two cents worth.. I started my 2 meter experience less than four months ago and was warned not to start with a ht. I went with my gut and purchased a dual band alinco ht as my first, and LOVED IT! I was amazed that I could get to a repeater 30+ miles from my house with great reports on 1.5 watts! So if you feel that a ht is best for you, go for it! I've also been looking into this kenwood and the yaesu vx-6r and it seems to be a toss-up for me. I know you'll have fun with it!

Thanks Randy. Yeah, I am really limited to the portable. This summer I hope to put up an out building on my property and have informed my other that it will have a spot for a small ham shack. Until then I am going to go with the portable. Thanks for your comments.

Congratulations, and welcome to the wonderful world of radio! Wish you were where I could hear you when you get your new radio, maybe I can find a linked reaper system that'll bridge the distance between us.

Have Fun!
