Many goods years of operating to you and all. Have fun!

Me too! 1 year in Nov 2002. Fascinating hobby, Lots of interesting people.
Congrats to all of you, and welcome to the best hobby on God's Earth. This is 7 years for me, and it has done nothing but get better. I'm so glad to see new Hams getting into CW. I make a few occasional phone contacts, but CW is my favorite, so get on the air on the CW portions of the band and listen for me. I'm happy to slow down to any speed you need. Stick with it, both phone and CW, and you will be a good, experienced op sooner than you think! n5xm

Jim,
I too had my first HAM "birthday" on January 31st and as I read your post I shared the joy you expressed as my experience has been similar. #What has impressed me most are the great PEOPLE I have met, how much I have learned from them in such a short time, how willing they have been to "show me the ropes" of proper operating technique, share their experience, their equipment, their know-how. #There are several guys in my local community who have been particularly generous to me in many ways. #
In the year to come I am looking forward to building my own rig - an Elecraft K2 which is now on the way to me from the company. #I look forward to my second Field Day as eagerly as my first - when I got my first taste of HF with one of my Ham buddies and was inspired to upgrade to General within two months after. #I also look forward to meeting some newer Hams than I and passing on a little something I've learned ... to continue the tradition.

Well I just upgraded to Extra from General, Well up until Dec 2001 I was a Tech Plus. having gotten my Novice Lic back in 1980 then went down to the FCC in NYC took the test for General flunked the code but passed the General test. I am now a disabled ham living in Redding, CA only on 2 meters at the moment. but before my Spouse kiccked me out of our house I had made several DX contacts the first one was a New Zeland station and Astrailna over the next several months I talked to the Fugi Islands and Checzk Republic....
Good luck

Well Jim, #thanks for the nice story about your first year in the hobby. #From the responses showing up here I would say you have brought back many memories for a lot of people. #Me included. #The first year was pretty exciting for all of us I would imagine. #Especially those amateurs who only had a year to upgrade or loose it. #I've been in the hobby for ten years but only on HF for about 1 year. #There are great elmering people everywhere in this hobby and it sounds like you are joining the ranks. #Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Best Wishes

Thanks for the reminder of how exciting a first year can be. January is my anniversary month too. This is my 6th year to be licensed. Each year I meet more and more hams and realize that they are the unadvertised premium that comes with ham radio.
Keep on keeping on!

THOSE OLD "BOAT ANCHORS" WERE ALSO KNOWN AS "TURKEY ROASTERS " A TERM THAT WOULD #BECOME APPARENT IF YOU EVER HAVE TO SHARE A SMALL SPACE WITH ONE OR MORE OF THEM !
I WAS LICENCED IN THE MID 70S AND WAS ACTIVE FOR ABOUT TEN YEARS, THEN DROPPED OUT FOR A WHILE.
I GOT BACK INTO IT LAST APRIL AND I HAVE MORE EQUIPMENT NOW THAN I EVER HAD BACK THEN.
I DON'T HAVE ANY "TURKEY ROASTERS" NOW BUT I DO HAVE A FEW THAT HAVE TUBE DRIVERS AND FINALS.
THEY ARE #NOT THAT DIFFERENT FROM THE OLD RIGS, JUST A BIT LESS PRONE TO DRIFT AND A LOT EASIER ON THE POWER BILL !
I never heard the term Turkey Roaster..
But a few linears have been know as Apple Friers...
