I recently purchased a TS-2000 with hopes to eventually purchase my first handheld the TH-D7AG so I could use Kenwood's Sky Command. I just found out with great disappointment that the TH-D7AG is discontinued and after talking with a Kenwood Rep. (KJ6HI) I also found out that they will eventually make the "next generation" TH-D7AG but it will not be anytime soon. I don't think I can wait that long and really want a handheld now. The only other handheld that appears to be anywhere close to the TH-D7AG is the Yaesu VX-8R. Should I fork out $400 for this handheld or wait for the new TH-D7AG? I have heard mixed reviews about the VX-8R especially because there is no computer programming for it. Does anyone have any opinions on the VX-8R, or could anyone recommend another good handheld? Or should I wait?

Thanks for any input.

If you truely want to run sky command you'll need the th-d7ag. Have you considered looking on QTH swapmeet or QRZ's for sale for one? There's nothing wrong with buying a second hand rig online.

I bought my TS-2000, a Yaesu FT-60R, and a Yaesu FT-100D all from different people on QRZ, and an Icom IC-91AD from a ham on QTH. All used, and all in perfect working order.

You're best bet is to find someone who's no longer using their's and has it for sale. I've used my TS-2000 cross-band with a regular ht, but for it to properly work, I need the HT with sky command.
